I wish that anyone needing a (rather opinionated but somewhat skilled) PLS, particularly in Oklahoma or NW Oregon would contact me. Willing to relocate. The email in my profile is current.

*EDIT* It's current now!

Okay, so was it this story that led you to conclude that maybe Oklahoma was going to continue on a downward trajectory?

Um... That stuff happens once in a while...

The last time I witnessed something like that was about 30 years ago at Ft. Sill OK, only it was a 155 mm howitzer that was the guilty party. A certain artillery survey crew set a couple control points. It was common practicè for them to leave a completed form at the control point with the coordinates of the points, the azimuth & distance between the points. There was also a spot on the form for the back azimuth.

Later the 155 was fired for effect and the round landed 3200 mils in the opposite direction of it's intended target.(impact range) It landed off the post in an unihabitated area and didn't do any damage. But I'm sure it was the talk of the post...

Later I.....errr...that survey crew was instructed NOT to fill out the back azimuth on the form ever again...

But really, everybody knew where the impact range was and all guns should point towards it.

Stray rounds at Ft. Sill

> Um... That stuff happens once in a while...

Yes it does. We were widening Sheridan Rd. in '85 from the south gate to the Burger King and someone on the range dropped a 155 into a fella's swimming pool. I can't remember exactly where it was at, but it was far enough away from the range to scare you.

Ft. Sill usually has over 300 days a year of live fire. Some say you get use to it. In 18 months, I never did. You do get to where you can tell the difference between the 105mm and the 155mm,....the 105s don't rattle the fillings in your teeth.

This was not exactly the freak accident claimed in the segment. In Vietnam, I saw several 8" LIVE howitzer rounds (200 lb) ricochet without exploding when fired as "direct fire" - essentially a level tube.

These guys were obviously inexperienced playing artillerymen. Fortunately for all concerned it was not a live round or the outcome would have been much worse. Gross negligence, in my opinion.

Yep....I agree. I likes my guns. But, no place for that kind of weapon within miles of homes.
