I have been provided a spreadsheet full of data for some control points for a project I am starting next week in WV. I would like to get these points plotted onto some aerial imagery to help me "walk up to" these points in the field.

I will be very glad to email the xlsx file to anyone who offers to help.

Here are some screen shots of the xlsx file (which inclludes columns A through U)

(the file itself has 123 rows / points)

I recall a few weeks back someone posted a link to Georeferenced images for West Virginia. If you can find those, they should go right in at exactly the right location. Use the "Place by world file" option.

Also, I've been seeing that Google and ESRI have teamed up on some free stuff that allows you to plot points directly into Google Earth. Not tried it myself yet. But that too might be a possibility.

I think you can import an image from google earth in if you have autocad 2012. Try typing "goo" or "google" not sure which.

Brad, I think this is the right idea.

Bypass Carlson and go straight to KML and then open the file in Google Earth.

I wrote a DOS program a few years ago that converts from CSV to KML. I'd be happy to send you the program, but it might be best if you first send me the CSV file so I can test it.

Snce you already have lat and long of the points its easy to bring it into Google Earth.
Look for a program called "KMLCSV converter", its free.
Basically you need to create a comma delimited file from the spreadsheet you already have in the format of LONG,LAT,DESCRIPTION.
The program will convert this to a KML to open in google earth.

Hmm....I did that job, and I created that spreadsheet. Contact me if you need anything. What are you guys going to do there?

I can provide you a geotiff with all of that info. Or just a simple coordinate file.

I also have a complete report, recovery sheets for the mons we set, etc. Let me know if you don't have that.

It was a fun job...

Here are some videos...

Parsons Videos (go to page two for the videos)

EDIT - posted after you added the link and answered my question 😉

Is that the confluence of the Black Fork and the Shavers Fork in Parsons?

I don't get out that way much any more, but I used to spend a good bit of time chasing trout & grouse not to far upstream (around Davis & Canaan Valley)

Yep, We surveyed a bunch of cross sections around Parsons. Of course it was in the middle of winter...

And we scanned 7 bridges.

The aerial imagery came in from the Carlson GIS module (not the GIS menu found in Carlson Survey) as part of the Arcgis Online Services command series found in Carlson 2012 and later.

The KMZ file that is/was opened in Google Earth was created from the newly improved Write Google Earth routine that was released as part of the core Carlson 2013 release.
