No single series should be used used. The multipath profile changes as the satellites cross the sky and deflect off the static (or waving in the breeze) multi-path hazards. ... at exactly the same time and as close together as possible is the closest you'd get to same-same. The cross bar should be rotated, and the order changed in repeat tests. If this is such a bad idea, why have the academic tests use a crossbar? But, open minded on this: what is the alternative that would provide closer to the same conditions at the same time?
I don't see any trees in your picture.
Gavin,
I spent a full afternoon proving that simultaneous comparative testing can not be performed in the woods by two receivers trying to be close enough physically to declare the conditions similar. Each point in the woods is unique.
The recording and playback method you reference sounds like the best solution, but is not possible for someone like me to accomplish.
So...I suspect we will have a closed traverse, with a number of sideshot points to accommodate the size of the group that shows up.
If we devote a full day collecting these points, in the same manner we do our jobs everyday, I am pretty sure we will all learn a lot.
Why does it have to be so scientific? It is physically impossible for two receivers to be in the exact same spot at the same time.
Put a series of points in the woods, 20-50' apart and both receivers have at it. Jump around as they choose untill they get them all. Repeat it 3 times.
What are the odds that the conditions are going to favor one receiver over the other on all the points three times in a row. Either they are going to be very similar or one is going to be a clear cut winner.
OK, just to recap.
It's a comparison of the Trimble R10, vs the Javad LS.
I have a Javad. @StLSurveyor has an R10 setup.
It's to happen on November 10 and 11, 2017 That's a Friday, and a Saturday. Some will arrive on Friday, and Leave Sunday. Others are just coming Saturday. Saturday is the main event.
It's at Davidsonville Historic State Park.
It's about 2 hrs, 15 min NE of Little Rock.
It's about 20 min SW of Pocahontas AR
It's about 107 Miles NW of Memphis
If you have a RTK GPS system, and feel it is on par with these, and you want to bring it to compare, well, come on. @RADAR mentioned bringing a Leica. I think it's fine, ESPECIALLY if when he sees what we are doing, and feels his equipment is on par.
We anticipate setting up an obstical course, and observing HOW each others equipment works, and doing our own independent look at things.
Everyone is invited.
I recommend that Alcohol usage be kept medicinal, minimal, and private.
I will be taking pictures, of both the persons, and the equipment. And, of some of the locations used to test.
No food is currently being provided. We will probably have a campfire. And, I am looking into a campfire coffee pot.
Bring sack lunch. Bring Drinks.
Objectives: To expand USER awareness of technology, and methods. To see hands on examples of modern surveying equipment, in challenging environments.
To encourage Land Surveyors to be more involved with developing technology.
To make an "In the woods and field" assessment of two of the leading developers. (Javad and Trimble).
I have never seen a Trimble R10. I'd like to see one in action.
I'm sure there will be users also, who would like to see a Javad in action.
That's all I can think of for now.
Hope to see you there.

Nate,
I'll be there. To observe and for fellowship. Note that the Park is offering a 'Dutch Oven' class on the 11th.
Who else is going?

Sounds interesting. Ala heavyweight match between the 2. haha.
Too bad I'm on the other side of the globe. Will be interested to see the results and pictures!.
Maybe shoot a little video too?
I would like to come, especially to meet you guys, but don't know for sure if I can yet.
For now put me down as a MAYBE.
Wish I could come but the 11th is opening day of rifle season.

Yep, I can't make it either but can't wait for the feedback. Everyone have fun and be safe.
If there is anyone in the Southeast who would like to do the same thing I'm up for it.
The Days Inn still has rooms available!
Is this a done deal, or watch the weather and see?
If so, what day(s) and time?
I get 1-1/2 on weekends....
It looks to be set in stone. Unless we have tornadoes.
