I recently has some utilities marked in Sringfield, MO for survey I am working on. The utilities were marked, and there were two white vent pipes approximately 2inches in diameter on site. There were what appeared to be gas markings right at the vent pipes, but there were also white paint markings leading out from the vent pipes in a line similar to the way other utility lines are marked.

The paint markings were to there when I marked the site for the locate request. I marked the site with white flags, white flagging on tree branches, and stakes with white flagging.

The utility locate reference cards I have show the white paint as marking the limits of proposed excavation.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
Jimmy

The white paint marks the limits of excavation. What is the question?

In my company we mark the limits for the locators with white paint and flags. The locators mark the utility with appropriate colors. If you are asking what do you label the white as on your drawing, my guess is it would be someones opinion of limits of excavation.

Dang, Sorry for the misspelling in the title. I am still not used to this keyboard on the new laptop.

I did not realize I did not ask a question in the original post. I have about a dozen things going on right now.

My question is this: Is white paint used to mark any utilities?

I thought a had seen a card in the past where white was also used to mark a certain type of utility. It has been many, many years ago, and this is the first time I have had utilities marked in Missouri.

Thanks,
Jimmy

White paint for underground utility marking

I'm kind of with the color crowd for utilities painting things, and now they use flags sometimes. I think this is it?

White - excavation limits
Orange - telephone
Yellow - gas
Red - elec
Green - sewer
Blue - water
There may be more

Me, I only carry orange. Years ago I had a telephone staker tell me to switch colors so as not to confuse the contractor. I think we all can guess what I told that guy....lol

Around here they are now using purple for reclaimed water lines. (The pipe is purple, too.)

very plausible option 1:

In piecing the puzzle together with the process of designating utilities we often mark in white to let us know SOMETHING is there. This is done in our preliminary stages and is SUPPOSED to be painted over with the correct APWA colors.

Very plausible option 2:

White is used in Subsurface Utility Engineering a lot of times to mark out the depths. so if you saw depths this could be the case.

Very plausible option 3:

Utility companies will mark there proposed lines to be Horizontally drilled (HDD) in white.

Its probably 1 or 3. I own a locating/SUE company in Georgia and these should be the only logical explanations.

Off topic and self serving I will go ahead and add. Please be cautious of stamping or designing off of something that your states one-call system has located. I could go on and on with why, but a big reason is you can't disclaimer yourself out of whats printed on your survey. The one-call and the utility companies cannot sue one another, so I have seen first hand several cases where the surveyors professional liability has to pay up. There's a lot of companies like mine that are professional services with their own professional liability that provide a great service to surveyors for when it is required by the client.

I hope this answers your question! and beerleg rocks! 😀

I handle about 700-1000 NJ One Call tickets per year every year for the agency I have as consulting contact with.
White is for mark out limits exclusively by the caller/excavator.
Anything else from a One Call perspective is considered noise and is ignored.
When I am using a SUE firm for u/g utility locations they usually use pink so as to differ from a One Call mark out.
I agree with GaSUEman, if you want good accurate locations hire a reputable SUE firm.

Purple has become standard for reclaimed water here in Arizona too. Seemed a bit odd to be buying purple flagging and paint, but that's ok. Purple pipes, meter boxes, valve boxes. Bluestake seems to have the colors the same pretty much everywhere now.
