It means you fully understand every deed you read. It means you actually HAVE every deed you need. It means you find every monument that is called for, implied, or that there is historic record of. It means you properly assemble the records, monuments, and information, and know what you are doing. It means you leave behind enough footprints, so that others can un-ambiguously follow you. It means you don't do shortcuts. It means you don't make mistakes in depicting the results of your survey on a plat. It means you understand the limits of the equipment you use. It means you build into your procedures enough redundancy, to know what kind of tolerances you are working with. It means you are given a special privilege... A PLS number. Don't abuse it.

It means you don??t do anything because even the best surveyors make mistakes. ?ÿ
Worthy goals Nate and ones a surveyor should never stop trying to achieve.

It means you fully understand every deed you read..
Hold it right there, Nate.
I have read more than one deed that I didn??t fully understand.
one in Massachusetts over 150 years old called out the abuttors and the town, Norwell and nothing else.?ÿ
a description in St. John called for a bearing and distance from one monument to another ?? along the fence and stone wall on the ridge?. That was 5 very different calls.
know what you are doing
That leaves a good chunk of us out already.
you don't make mistakes
Pretty sure that leaves all of us out. I've made lots of mistakes and will continue to do so.

"To err is human" -?ÿEvery surveyor makes mistakes
The trick is to catch them before they become a problem
It means you know what you need to know.?ÿ It also means you know what you don't know, but, you know where to get the answers.?ÿ It also means you warn yourself that you don't know everything and simply hope you find out what you don't know in time to find out what are the answers to what you realize you never knew.
To me, it has meant getting to work in a new location and meet new people with most every job, and hoping that the man or beasts I may encounter will be friendly and not belligerent, its learning to take what I hear with a grain of salt and to realize that there are at least two sides to every story.?ÿ Trying to listen with patience and?ÿ humility, because what I am told by the client and the neighbors is often very valuable.?ÿ It's about dealing with stray bits of left over flaggon in my pockets, and then lying awake at night thinking about how I might tackle the job ahead, or fretting about the implications to myself and the general public of a survey from the past, often second guessing my line of reasoning when it comes to a difficult boundary determination.?ÿ It means relishing that I can be my own boss and work with my sons.?ÿ It means thinking about that passage in Genesis while hacking my way through a briar patch.
The general public's perception is different:
- Often when I say I'm a surveyor in social contexts they think I do phone surveys or work for the media conducting surveys.
- I'm like a dentist where somebody (Banks, fence and construction contractors, crazy neighbors etc.) tells them they must utilize my services and they're irate about the expense, necessity and pain involved.
- I'm working for a Gov'mnt agency and they rightly are reticent to cooperate given that it probably involves some public works activity which may diminish their estate (road widening, sewer engineering, the list goes on).
- Even after serving notice I'm continually accosted in the field by folks that are like barking dogs wanting to know what right I have to wander around on their adjacent streets, poke around their fence corners and take "pictures" with some fancy camera on stilts.
We're not like the ice cream truck welcome to show up and amuse their kids,?ÿ more like we're the harbingers of bad news concerning the future.?ÿ I think the general public views us in a negative light.
I did notice a marked difference during the pandemic,?ÿ as people seemed to enjoy a diversion from the boredom of lock down.
It means being a part of my community and providing a much needed service to that community.?ÿ?ÿ
It means being appreciated by the local community and contributing to its health and growth.?ÿ Walking into a coffee shop and seeing faces of people who may not like me personally but respect me for the profession I represent.?ÿ?ÿ
Anybody can be trained to do what we do and pass the exams and become licensed.?ÿ What makes a surveyor is dedicating their lives to doing each and every survey to the best of their ability.?ÿ?ÿ
What it means to be a surveyor??ÿ It means I get to hear "Oh, you do construction?" about 7 billion times.?ÿ
It means you get to hear the following start to a?ÿ (very long or very short) conversation with a potential client:?ÿ Hello, there.?ÿ I was told I gotta get an appraisal of my property.?ÿ Wut duz one o' dem cost?
@t-ford?ÿ
You hit on something that a minority of our brethren get to experience.?ÿ That is, being recognized by friends, neighbors, family, casual acquaintances as being far more than just a guy doing a job to make a living.?ÿ We get to assist in the betterment of our communities in many ways beyond monetary donations annually.?ÿ Frequently, we are involved in guiding others locally in making wise choices based on what we have learned from our involvement in both our job community and our neighboring communities.
Many people today live in areas without communities.?ÿ That is sad.
?ÿHello, there.?ÿ I was told I gotta get an appraisal of my property.?ÿ Wut duz one o' dem cost?
"Why would I know, I'm a surveyor. Go talk to your lender And hire an appraiser....."
Sometimes brut force adjustment is the only thing that works....?ÿ

They DO need a survey.?ÿ That's where the experienced calm comes in.?ÿ Take a minute to be cordial and investigate what they are really doing.?ÿ Most of the time they are sort of lost and didn't understand a third of what they have been told by others involved in whatever is going on.
Had a woman call the other day who I could tell was very apprehensive about calling.?ÿ As soon as she told me her name, I responded with, "Well, watta ya know, I haven't chatted with you in a very long time."?ÿ Then went on to explain how we first met about 40 years ago while working for the same employer.?ÿ That relieved her greatly.?ÿ We lived a little over two miles apart, as the crow flies, for about five years.?ÿ Once we got on to the survey details, I was able to reveal that I had worked for one of her neighbors about eight years ago, so had a step up on knowing what was needed for control.
Fair.?ÿ I'm not licensed yet, and not comfortable in my current skin, so my reactive comment is not ideal or cordial for sure. I'll work on it. Been a really bizarre week.
Thanks for the apropos and continuing dialogue that helps me grow in this path.

Carry on.
