Mine is the question about slope distance, vs, horizontal distance. They want to know what dimension we use. And, as a corollary "Is there more land in hilly country?" which is basically the same question, but in a different application.
I advance the theory, that the general public who asks this question, is not well acquainted with our business. And, that the ones who do ask, are even less acquainted, because they have not thought of it yet!

"What's the best part of surveying, the money or the groupies?"
"Do you work in winter?" (Recently, this has been a common question :'( )
"Digging for gold?"

Funny story.
In the middle '70s I worked for a firm that had a COE contract to survey and monument portions of the "fee line" around Lake Eufaula in eastern Ok. This required a lot of section boundary work and heinous line clearing.
The company hired a local fella and his crew to cut line for us. He had the 4x4 flatbed and chain-saws. All we had to do was flag the line and they got to it. Bois d'arcs and all.
We'd come home on the weekends and then we would all meet up at the bait shop on Monday morning. One Monday morning in fall they didn't show up. After about an hour the party chief called his house. His wife answered and explained, "Oh my, he don't work any during deer season. I won't see him for a spell."
Sure enough, after deer season they showed back up ready to get back to work. We were happy they were back.
"What are you take'n pictures of?"
"Are they gonna improve the road?"
Is that a camera ?
How much does it cost for a survey?
Number one question by a mile. Frequently the first words out of their mouths.
:good: :good:
(Insert southern accent) "Why are you way down here when the property you are surveyin(g) is way down yonder?"
I wonder how many of them after our conversation look at their wife (old lady) and say, "I sure told them, didn't I?"
I love living in the south. It's fun. 🙂

"Why do surveys cost so much?"
Though the above stated, "Digging for gold?" is popular here too.
Typically after asking why they cost so much, you are then informed that all you have to do is find the four corners.
"Why do you surveyors set so many pins in one small area? Can't you ever agree? How do we know which one is right?"

- Have a nice day! Or, may your monument prevail over some guy's touchscreen.
The usual tactless one nowadays with GPS seems to be 'how much does that stuff cost?', previously with theo's and levels it was 'is that a camera?' or if working on a road, 'is that a speed trap?'.
Had an old acquaintance roll down his window the other day and shout to me, 'I thought they only let clever people use that stuff!'

O! That? well they still restrict it. That's why I'm out here today. If it were easy, anybody could do it!
