What is the best underground steel pipeline locator?

If you want more options on tracing, hands down an RD8100.?ÿ If you want simplicity, I would say a Metrotech.?ÿ You will have to purchase the latter on ebay though.?ÿ Metrotech was bought out by Vivax and the models have changed.?ÿ Most all of the OneCall providers use RDs.

User friendly Metr0tech 810 for 80% of the work; RD 7000 or 8000 series for problem solving?ÿ

Or a sharp shovel.  One really good signal today in the entire county road intersection.  Nothing else seemed plausible or worth digging up.  Went down only about 10 inches and found a 2-1/2" pipe running right down the center of the road bed.  Silly us.  We thought maybe someone had set a bar at the side of the limestone of record.
