The contents of these files, is of considerable interest, to me. They can go "out of date", they can need replaced. They are a mystery to me, at this time.

Firmware is the software that runs the receiver and is stored in the NVROM (nonvolatile read only memory). Nonvolatile memory does not need power to retain stored information whereas files stored in volatile memory are lost when the device is power cycled.

Basically think of it as the bios of the computer in your receiver.
It tells the receiver what kinds of data it should be dealing with, and what to do with it.
