Its what Ive always known as a triangulation station. Made it easy to survey on state plane coordinates here in utah with nothing but a total station. Just sight a few mountain peaks and take shots angles only. Infact in northern utah most of the VRS gps network are either occupying or still reference the mountain peak triangulation station points.

I agree with Jim on its height. Maybe a stand for a light used in night-time triangulation observations from other stations.

If the stand is related to the triangulation station disk, why isn't it OVER the disk?

Agreed, but...

You misspelled "williwaw".

It may have been an eccentric station to show the light at the same time it was being observed from. On a bilby tower the light was often above the instrument, but when they used a four foot stand for the instrument they would sometimes have the light eccentric to the station.

I have a spare 5800 that I could let cook on it for giggles, but need to come up with a solid miniature light weight tripod suitable for backpacking.
Wouldn't mind returning to spend the night at a near by lake called 'Fossil Lake'. Have a bit more time to scare up a mammoth bone or tooth to add to the collection.

Might make a tasty breakfast snack for a grizzly.

Mr. Colt Anaconda says not. Didn't see any bear sign, nothing for them to eat up there. Down along the rivers where the salmon are running is an entirely different story. For me it's always a treat to see one ... at a distance. I've had a momma grizzly and two nearly full grown cubs at spitting distance and as long as they know you're there and don't smell like KFC, it's all good. Just don't surprise one at close quarters.
