I have always thought this area would make a great location to shoot an old western movie. The purpose of the survey was to locate the alignment of an old wagon trail.

By the way, the snow covered mountain is Mt. Shasta (dormant volcano).
The mountain centered is Sheep Rock, which is the remnant of an ancient volcano.

That movie might be Western Drought Continues(not much snow on Shasta, again).

I did a google view, then a street view of the approximate area of your photo. Near the intersection of A12 and Harry Cash road?

On the aerial there shows a development of some sort that on the street view was just farm land. Is that a feed lot of some sort? It looks like a miniature subdivision 🙂

Beautiful setup you have, I bet it's chilly!!

35 years ago I did a gravity survey about 30 miles East of ya (Medicine Lake). Beautiful area, and lots of really cool volcanic features. I though Glass Mountain was one of the coolest things I had ever seen (at the time).

Is this the A12 you speak of?

Yes that is the general area.

I too looked at that development and wondered what it was. Turns out it is a large animal rescue operation. They take in large animals that people can no longer want/are able to take care of. Web Site

Also in that area, you will find the lavender fields as well as some strawberry fields. The strawberries grow well in the volcanic sand and get the required freeze they need to produce fruit.

Loyal, a co-worker did a bunch of surveying out in that country related to hydro-thermal development. This was probably in the 1980's I'm guessing.

Glass mountain IS really cool

It's interesting to think how far the obsidian probably traveled around the west, being traded by the Indians. I would bet pieces made it all the way across the country.

More pictures of Sheep Rock

This picture was taken at a popular stop along the wagon trail. In the background there are water troughs and a tank where spring water is captured.

In the 1930's this was a popular spot for boot-legger's to operate their stills.
There was juniper berries, firewood, and water...I don't see why that wouldn't work.

I climbed about 100' up that rocky bluff and found evidence of many small trees having been chopped down.

I always wondered who did that and why. Could have been Indians I guess. There should have been plenty of firewood on the flat. Maybe they made signal fires up on the bluff?

Sounds about right, I was working for the DOE on a geo-thermal recon contract. We had just finished up ~2 weeks up near McKenzie Bridge Oregon, and we were working our way back to SLC. As I recall, Medicine Lake was the third or fourth stop on the "tour."

Which old wagon trail? Anyone of historical significance?

I recently worked on the research and mapping end of a couple of surveys up in Modoc and Lassen Counties. The old Applegate-Lassen trail ran near to one of the surveys. Unfortunately I wasn't on the field side of that survey and so couldn't go see it...
