My brother in law has written an article for Professional Surveyor, or xyHt as it will be known from now on.
Bryan is a pilot as well as a computer guy, instructor for Frontier Precision out west in CO. He was sent to Belgium for instruction in the use of the Trimble UX5.
This is an article about the potential of UAS in the USA.
Some of y'all may know Bryan.....
Well, that certainly takes the wind out of UAS sales in the U.S. for about 17 months!
I was told that the Trimble GIS guys in Canada have trashed a few fuselages on takeoff. I know of a few people who are using remote control gadgets professionally. I heard about a wedding photographer and there is a PLS/PE further up Cape who has something or another with a mounted camera.
So, go with the tried and true. Get Air Scooter back in line (stock is low) and get their ultralight copter up in the air.
Air Scooter II
A 5 year old can fly my quadcopter without any trouble. They should have different levels for types of UAV. Mine is less than 3 pounds.
Excellent article.
Why are all these manufacturers buying adds in the magazine if those UAS are not allowed to be used by the private industry?

1. There are international readers
2. There are public sector readers
3. You have to build brand recognition prior to the moment when someone makes a purchase
Read the article in the Professional Surveyor, it covers the difference between hobby and commercial requirements.
We will be selling the Trimble UX5 when it is acceptable to the general public. One thing I don't think most people are aware of is that these aircraft while light fly close to 60 MPH. Weighing in between 3 - 4 LBS I am sure you don't want to be accidentally flying into a private / commercial plane.
On the bright side, If you are any type of government agency you can apply for a COA from the FAA and after 5 to 8 months they will grant you a conditional operating authorization and you can fly until your hearts content.

Huge difference between controlling a quadcopter verses a fixed wing. I hover if I let go of the controls and see everything in front of the camera in realtime. Easy to fly.
thank you, these vendors must know what they are doing. There seems to be an add every second page, UAS must be the next big thing.
-Hi Lady, can I buy you a drink? What do I do? I am a pilot. I pilot UAS...Anyway, I won't bore you with technicalities about the aircraft...
-Look dad, I found myself a pilot!
- Good for you my girl, now that's someone that can really bring the bacon home!
- So your the pilot? Sir, yes Sir!

Drone cam owners, KATV shrug off FAA
This is the headline of the lard story in the Business & Farm section of the Arkansas Democrat Gazette today. A Photo Journolist at the local ABC Afulliate used his personal quad copter and camera to capture footage of the Tornado Damage from last Sundays Tornados. The FAA has contacted the station and the photo Journolist. It will be interesting to see the outcome of this. The station claimed that since they are not paying him to fly the drone it is not a commercial use and he plans to keep flying.
Drone cam owners, KATV shrug off FAA
The FAA already tried to fine someone for commercial use of a drone ($10,000) but the judge ruled in favor of the pilot that is why you now see people using them commercially until some real laws are written. FYI- the FAA rules were only "guidelines".

And then there's this story...

In Australia there are some pretty stiff regulations about commercial use but a lot of the bigger companies are starting to get the training and the manuals and the certification. I think soon we will all have one in the truck just like we all now have GNSS rovers as a standard piece of kit.
I'm looking at buying one soon but I think there has to be a bigger range than the two or three suppliers we have here. Any suggestions ?
UAV deliveries - sorry Amazon, you'e a century late
"As it turned out, the gold rush was a bust, but when thought turned to hydroelectric power, rail and roadway were soon to follow."
Interesting analogy.

> Reading a bit on the history of the Upper Skagit valley in NW WA. Some amazing surveying and engineering feats in one of the most inaccessible parts of the country. We struggle up there with modern gear now.
Missouri Bill used a team of oxen to get the first steam engine, brought around to the west coast, to the summit of the Sierra Nevada's. They wanted to, and did; bore down and dig both ways, for the summit tunnel of the Central Pacific. Hollywood tried to replicate it, in the 60's and gave up; said it was impossible.

Yeah thanks, I've been looking at their CyberQuad but I want fixed wing and their selection looks like a costly overkill
