Driving big trucks is the worst part of the job for me. I'd rather have a small SUV or hatchback kitted out. When I'm so high up from the road, it feels like I'm a sailor instead of a driver. Parking in busy locations is another small nightmare.

Big trucks in the city are a hassle. Out in the country, not so much.?ÿ ?ÿIt is quite possible to get all the necessary gear in the smallest truck sold.?ÿ The crap that is hauled in a survey rig tends to expand to fill the available space.

And all that unnecessary crap adds weight, thus gas mileage reduction, and handling characteristics of the truck. Iƒ??ve seen ƒ??Survey trucksƒ? with more junk in them than Lamont usually brings home in any episode of Sanford and Son. ?????ÿ

Previous department had a 4WD 1 ton Quigley conversion GMC van, a ridiculous vehicle. They had a full sized floor toolbox in there, mustƒ??ve weighed 500lbs alone with all the tools and random junk in it. I swear you could completely dismantle the vehicle and put it back together again. I call it the Boy Scout mentality, any item you could possibly need once in a 30 year career should be in the truck.

I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it

I hate when you need it but don't know that you have it, go buy another one, then, next day, find that you now have three.

Still worse is needing it, knowing that you have it - somewhere - spending an hour tearing the truck apart looking for it, giving up and buying a new one, then, next day, finding the original.?ÿ

The 8-foot box is the nightmare, imo.

I have to admit - that is a sharp looking truck.

It sure is getting harder to find a regular cab.?ÿ It's even harder to find them with a mid-level amenities package.?ÿ As the article mentions, a very basic work truck is the usual for a regular cab (or trucks like the Ford Raptor).

I have a friend who has 2 ten-year old Toyota Tundra 4-doors out in his parking lot that are his back-up vehicles. They both have about 106,000 miles on them. I suggested that he sell me one at a good price. He said, "Okay. Look 'em up in the Blue Books and make me an offer." They were both appraised at approx. $22,000! Wow. I almost choked on my Pepsi. I'm on the west side of Houston for reference. Unbelievable. Needless to say, they are still sitting in his parking lot.

I have a 98 Chevy Z71 reg cab shortbox which I ordered new from the factory as they were hard to get then. I LOVE that truck, it only has 68k on it, but it is just about shot from rust due to me not having a garage.?ÿ I don't think I will ever sell or scrap it, but darn that red truck is NICE.
