I am frustrated and trying to fix Trimble TGO on a XP machine. I've done everything and anything to fix my problem. While waiting for support from Trimble REP (Can't contact TRIMBLE cause they are GODS), thought I would post here and maybe someone here has the answer.

Problem is when downloading from the data collector, got a message "Can not find file g03us.ggf", which is the geoid file. I went in and the files are still there. Only thing that has changed on this "download" computer was I added PDLconfig program and Trimble's GPS Configurator. I've tried to make a new grid file, cuninstalled the program and reinstalled, ran virus check, ccleaner, malwarebytes. Reinstalled, restarted. Finally did a restore to a day before installing those programs and all seemed well till this morning when I tried to download and all the templetes/project were missing. So again, I tried to repair using 1.63, but it is only a patch. So repaired with 1.60 and got those files back. But now TGO crashed after trying to make a new job file in TGO and just before you get the configuration window. WHAT A POS! HELP!

a copy of your ggf file needs to reside in C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesTrimbleGeoData directory.

Ditto what Bryan said. You could also download the new geoid09 and upload that too.

Hi Scott -

Your problem is probably because you did not do the coordinate-system update available from the Trimble web site, but anyway -

Here are the steps you need to follow for an up-to-date installation of Trimble Geomatics Office on a Windows XP computer. Windows Vista or Windows 7 are a completely different story, we have separate instructions for installing Trimble Geomatics Office on one of those operating systems.

This instruction is intended for users of the current-production Trimble products. It will also work fine with older products even though some of the updates are not necessary for the older products. The updates will not interfere with use of the older products, so you may as well do them.

I checked all the hyperlinks and paths immediately before sending this, but things can and do change.

1. Make sure you are logged on to the computer as Administrator (with full Administrator privileges) or you will just be wasting your time as you do the following updates. We are not Windows experts, but it is believed that a simple test will give a good indication as to whether or not you are logged on as Administrator. Right-click on the Start button. If you do not see "Open All Users", you are definitely not logged on as Administrator and will not be able to complete the instructions that follow. It is completely possible that even if you pass the preceding test you may not be able to install Trimble Geomatics Office. If that is the case, have your IT department do the following steps.

2. Install Trimble Geomatics Office Ver 1.6X from the CD. It makes no difference if your CD is Ver 1.60 or Ver 1.62, you will end up with Ver 1.63 installed either way. The last time I looked at a TGO Ver 1.62 CD, the Trimble files were all dated July 2003. This is why you need to do all the following patching to get things up to August 2011.

3. Update to Trimble Geomatics Office Ver 1.63, available from the Trimble web page at www.trimble.com. Follow the hyperlink sequence Support & Training | Support A-Z List | Trimble Geomatics Office | Downloads | v1.63. You definitely need to do the actual TGO Ver 1.63 update (the bottom hyperlink on that web page). This step seems to be necessary for the DC File Editor program to work with the more recent versions of Survey Controller.

We highly recommend doing the Coordinate System update (the top link on the page) as well, that brings in GEOID03 and a few more things that will make your survey life better.

While we're on the subject of geoid models, may as well go ahead and install GEOID09 as well. Complete instructions are in a separate document available from Inland GPS at http://cody.inlandgps.com/pub/Trimble%20Stuff/Instructions%20by%20Inland%20GPS/Install%20GEOID09%20in%20TGO.pdf

4. Update Trimble Data Transfer to the latest version, which was Ver 1.52 at the time of this writing and available at http://www.trimble.com/datatransfer/v152/ We recommend downloading the self-extracting installer file (hyperlink toward the bottom of that web page there is a link that says ". . . click here to run/save a single self-extracting executable") but if you want to do the web update feel free to try your luck. I generally avoid web updates but what do I know.

During the installation process you will probably encounter a "Hardware Installation" dialog that warns that the software for the Universal Serial Bus (USB) controllers has not passed Windows Logo testing. If you want the computer to work with Trimble equipment, click the "Continue Anyway" button. The writer know of no instances in which this has caused any problems whatsoever.

5. Download and run the latest update of the Trimble Office Configuration File Update Utility available at http://www.trimble.com/trimbleconfiguration_ts.asp. This provides to TGO information about the receivers and antennas that have been introduced during the past several years. At the time of this writing the latest version was dated 02 August 2011.

6. Update to (or, if you have not been using any Windows-based data collectors, install) Microsoft ActiveSync Ver 4.5 available at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=9e641c34-6f7f-404d-a04b-dc09f8141141 Our previous experience indicated it was best to remove earlier versions of ActiveSync before installing the new one. Seems like the installation for some versions of ActiveSync did not properly handle the update situation and you ended up still having the previous version in place instead of the desired new version. Now it seems like it does the update routine OK, but your mileage may vary.

7. The ActiveSync installation will require you to restart the computer, so do that before trying anything else.

8. After rebooting the computer, log on again as Administrator. Turn on the data collector and connect it to the computer using the USB cable. The computer should go through the "Found New Hardware" routine and eventually come back saying the new hardware is ready for use.

9. The Release Notes http://trl.trimble.com/docushare/dsweb/Get/Document-117190/ReleaseNotes.pdf for Trimble Geomatics Office Ver 1.60 (the latest Release Notes that include installation information) indicate that the Feature and Attribute Editor, RoadLink, and DTMLink must first be run under Administrator privileges, so start those utilities while logged on as Administrator.

That should be enough for now, TGO should now run fine under User privileges.

You will need to do the above-listed things to all the computers that will be used with recent versions of Survey Controller or newer Trimble GPS/GNSS receivers and antennas.

A little utility named ActiveSync Keys adds a registry tweak that sets ActiveSync so it does only Guest connections. In the Trimble application we are not synchronizing devices, so the Guest-only configuration prevents annoying requests from ActiveSync to establish partnerships. Most of our customers agree this is a valuable utility. We have posted ActiveSync Keys on our download site at http://cody.inlandgps.com/pub/ the zipped file contains both the software and some documentation.

I will add to Glenn's excellent instruction set that for a geoid model to be recognized by TGO, not only must the GGF file sit (for Windows Xp) in the Program FilesCommon FilesTrimbleGeodata folder, the geoid must also be included in the list of available geoid model definitions in Trimble Coordinate System Manager (CSM).

You can double-click on the current.csd file in the same Geodata folder to open it in CSM.

Click on the Geoid Models tab to see what geoids are already defined. The names listed will be the descriptions entered when they were created/saved using Grid Factory, not necessarily the GGF prefix. If you see 'GEOID03 (Conus)' listed as one of the geoid models in CSM - that is the model that corresponds to the g03us.ggf file - you should be good to go to import your data collector file.

A little utilized tip... while you are in CSM hold down the CTRL key and click on the names of the definitions that you never use under each tab, then right-click to bring up a sub-menu. Click on Hide to turn the definitions off. Hidden defintions are not seen by TGO or by the Survey Controller if you export a custom.csd file to the data collector. You can toggle the display on/off of hidden definitions under any tab by clicking on View > Hidden. You can enable the definitions for use again by clicking on the hidden description when it is displayed, right-click and select Hide (it should have a check mark next to it) to toggle it.

I have absolutely nothing to add to this conversation. I'm just posting so I can find the tip about Activesync later when I am on the XP computer.

Thanks,
James

Another thing to check is your geoid name in your C:Program FilesCommom FilesTrimbleGeoData has to match the geoid file in your collector. In this case make sure you have a g03us.ggf in your GeoData file.

Glenn that was really awesome, would you happen to have a nifty set of instructions for installing TGO on a Windows 7 machine, I have been holding onto an old desktop machine with XP Pro just because I can't get TGO to work on my laptop with Windows 7.

Scott Partridge solved that problem for us on the RPLS.com board. You can find the instructions reposted [msg=20916]here[/msg].

Trimble Geomatics Office on Windows 7

Mr. Lines -

Yes, I put together and posted a set of instructions for installing Trimble Geomatics Office on Windows 7 earlier this year.

That document is a compilation of all the suggestions from Scott Partridge and others who have contributed to finding a way to get that to work.

IMHO it is never wise to run any computer as administrator except when absolutely necessary, so those instructions are directed toward running the program from a standard user account. The Feature and Attribute Editor is pretty unpredictable under a standard user account, so a separate document provides instructions for a workaround that allows giving that utility the privileges it needs without actually giving the "user" the password to the administrator account.

It is suspected that there may be conflicts with other Trimble software running on the same computer. It may be possible to get around such problems by rebooting before switching programs.

Please advise if you find errors in or problems using the instructions.

Have you recently switched to Trimble Access 2011 or updated to SC 12.47? Added Trimble Access Installation Manager?

The problem you report is due to the new Geoid models that Trimble is using. There are now local geoids and global geoids....

Try this....

Get out of TGO. click on the current.csd file. Doing so will open up the Coordinate System Manager. Go to "View" then "Options".
What do you see for a path? It should be C:Program FilesCommon FilesTrimbleGeodata. Hit OK. Try TGO again. What happens?

We have seen this happen a number of times.... doing the above seems to fix it.
