I want to get raw data out of an S6. I attached a Trimble hirose to db9 connector to the port labeled "COM" on my S6. The DB9 end I connected to my laptop and started realterm (serial and TCP/IP communications software).

On the data collector (Trimble Access 2020.01) after connecting I went to instrument...data output...and setup the parameters:

Streamed Data: continuous (also tried "after measurement")
Streamed Format: GDM HA VA SD
Port details
Controller port: Instrument COM
Baud Rate: 9600
Data Bits: 8
Parity: 1
Stop Bits: 1
Flow Contol: Xon/Xof (also tried none)

when I press START in access, it says "Error - Can not open serial port"

I would have thought that is what that port is for. If it is, then maybe the port doesn't work on this instrument? Or it is a Trimble software only function?

Hi John,

For the controller port, try labeling it as the COM port on your laptop rather than the COM port of the S6.?ÿ If that doesn't work, let me know and I will break out an instrument.?ÿ This is definitely not a Trimble software only function.?ÿ I have talked to several people that connect in a similar fashion using a 3rd party controller for magnetometer and bathymetric surveys.
