I have an R8-I and I'm wondering if anyone knows of a way to update the firmware to a version that supports GLONASS. The standard WinFlash from Trimble won't do the trick, but surely someone out there has figured out how to make it work.

Thanks in advance for your help.

It's not only firmware, but you need a new antenna. That's the reason newer R8's have a bigger bump on them.

don't know for the model 1,
what does the label on the receiver say, is it GPS-receiver or GNSS-receiver (glonass included). The first is not upfgradable, the second may be upgradable if ...

I thought all Model 1s were GPS only? No?

I guess that's right,
I looked for a tech sheet on trimble.com but could not find one for the model 1.
By checking the label GPS vs GNSS one could be pretty sure when it has Glonass hardware included.
We worked with the 5800 before, that's the model before R8, no bump - no Glonass.

R8 Model 1 came out in 2004 before trimble even supported GLONASS
the hardware inside was a gps only board that could track L2c to make it different from the 5800
wasnt until 2006 that Trimble had a board in the R8-2 that could track GLONASS so you just cant upgrade your model 1

:-/ i just got disappointed. I have just purchased a reconditioned trimble R8 thinking that it tracks Glonass but no way man. The antennae inside are not supported for glonass.

Hi guys!

Tried Trimble DL application for my R8, doesn't see GPS. I suppose it's because I have model 1. Any chance to make it work with DL application somehow (by upgrading firmware etc.)?
P.S. BTW how can I check Trimble R8 model?

Thanks!

I can see the number, how can I understand the model?
And can the model 1 (supposedly) be upgraded to model 2 at least to work with Trimble DL application?

Thanks!

Look at the bottom, underneath "trimble" it will say "R8 Model 1" .....I am almost certain you can change it, but I am merely a user of 5800s R8-1s R8-3s and R8-4, contact you local dealer.

I do know that starting with model 2s they could be had with internal radios (tx), handy as hell. My dealer won't even order any without because they are so popular that way.

Jon,
Checked carefully - not a word, just the following number: 50159-71..
As I remember there was a link for model check, but cant find it.
Thanks.

You can download GPS Configurator (sic) from trimble and attach your R8-1 via cable to that and it will show you everything you always wanted to know about that receiver....

Post a picture of the bottom of the receiver, maybe a side profile shot too.

That's a model 1. If it was a model 2 it would say "R8 Model 2" these are gps only.

The R8 and the 5800 are very similar, they are both GPS units and can't be used as GNSS. They look alike, not sure just what differences are between them, but it isn't much, the 5800 I use is a very good machine and I'm sure the R8 is also.

The Bluetooth for the 5800 isn't all that great and the R8 may have better range I know the R8-2's do.

The 5800 was a big improvement over the 4800 (chicken bucket) receiver which was a big improvement over the 4700 (although the 4700 is a great base GPS unit).

I'm sure you will get good use out of it, but you won't have a GNSS machine no matter what you do.

Sounds like there's no way to make it work with Trimble DL. That's sad.
Thanks folks for your help!
