BTW received a reply from DL team:
"Problem with the R8-1 and older receivers is that they speak a different flavor of our default GNSS protocol.
So R8-1 (like R7-1 etc) are the last generation of GPS only receivers. With the R8-2 Trimble moved to a GNSS setup - so we were able to support GLONASS etc as well.
This resulted in an enhanced and reworked protocol - and not being downwards compatible.
Supporting a R8-1 does essentially mean adding a complete 'new' communication protocol to Trimble DL - and I'm honestly pessimistic that this well happen. I will add this email to our backlog list of tasks (you are not the first one asking for R8-1 support) - but I would not count on this."
