What is the best topo shoe solution/option for my ancient Leica pole (with the caveat that I do not want to remove the existing point)?
How about a rubber tube and a hose clamp?

Duct tape, and a tennis ball.

In a pinch I have done this. A plastic rod cap with duct tape works well for most topo features, as long as you don't apply a ton of pressure.
I used 3/4 pvc and slotted the top for a tight fit - optional plate at the bottom for muddy creek bottoms
Just like Nate does, a tennis ball and duct tape.
I use the Seco shoe on my Seco rod.?ÿ I know it won't work with the skinny Leica rod, but it's worth trying to replicate the functionality of the pin attachment in whatever you end up with.?ÿ The pin provides a solid connection yet makes installation and removal easy and quick.
A few random bits, a drill press, etc and you could replicate this in a diameter that would work on the skinny Leica pole.?ÿ I think you can get the spring pin at most hardware stores that have bolt bins.
I just cut a piece of 3/4 heater hose. I get 2-3 foot of it to keep in my truck and if I lose one, I cut another.
Cut it a little long to allow for the diameter stretching.
It works on everything except precise ground shots but I don't do precise ground shots. ??ÿ
I just put a small hole, enough for the rod point to poke through a bit, in a plastic rebar cap and duct tape it on. That little hundredth or so won't make any difference on dirt and it comes in handy for the occasional pavement shot as you're going along.
With the heater hose and surveying in muddy conditions, I can pinch the hose between my boots to pull it off. Shoot anything that needs precision and then stab the hose again and go. Never touch it.
