I found this video while searching for lessons on surgical methods so I wouldn't have to hire one of those expensive medical doctors.

We've seen worse.?ÿ At least he is finding monuments and not just saying the GIS is right.
Though he didn't check the distances with his tape to see if any of them were goat stakes or offset adjoiner lots. Some discussion of that could help viewers avoid nasty mistakes.
I thought it was weird that he didn't center his location dot on the app's illustration of the corner each time.
It appears that particular GIS was pretty close - better than most I've seen.
It's always interesting - and telling - that none of these realtors ever bring in a licensed surveyor for these videos.
?ÿ
I know better, but I threw my two cents in as I was drinking my second cup of coffee...I think I last commented on a non-SurveyorConnect site about three months ago, so I'm good through the end of the year...
Love the use of the hula hoop.
Would it really??ÿ Seems like he's just telling how to find existing monuments, not instructing how to set new ones.
That said, I know that GIS in my local area wouldn't get you within a hula hoop of the monument

Stay away from these guy's......... ???? ....they make you pay shipping costs
I'm getting a mental visual of the neighbor looking out his window and seeing me wander by holding my cell phone in front of me in one hand while holding a hot pink hula hoop in the other with a shovel and electronic gadget dragging along behind me affixed to a tether on my belt.
@flga-2-2?ÿ
Better to have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy.?ÿ Say that fast three times.
@bill93?ÿ
implication is GIS is right within the hula-hoop circle?ÿ
Going to need at least a 30' wide hula hoop around here. Be kind of awkward to drag around.
Just because I'm paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get me.
This video reminds me of a show, Hometime with hosts Dean Johnson and Joanne Liebler. They were making important decisions about major changes to houses, but never revealed their relationship to each other (married? boyfriend/girfriend? business partners). Nor did they reveal their relationship to the house (owners? renovating for free in exchange for the expected profits on the TV show? contractors?). Without understanding their financial interest, it was hard to decide if their decisions made any sense.
Likewise, the presenter of the video in this thread doesn't say if he is acting as an owner, real estate agent, friend, unlicensed land surveyor, or maybe just stopping by a home where the owners are away. Without understanding his position, it's impossible to evaluate whether his actions are lawful.
Suppose he's the owner. If he just found the rebars without making a video, or didn't derive any income from posting a video, his actions are probably lawful, assuming the neighbors don't mind the minor grass disturbance. But if he derives advertising income from the video, does that turn it into unlawful land surveying?
I always heard it as?ÿ
"I would rather have a free bottle in front of me rather than a free frontal lobotomy!
Love the comments.?ÿ ?ÿThat lot is a dang Unicorn, too.?ÿ ?ÿNo trees, no fences, 90's and all marked out and a GIS that looks to be pretty decent linework.?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ?ÿ
Really??ÿ I've been impressed that a homeowner can legally locate his own monuments, or what he thinks they are, using almost whatever means available.?ÿ I've advised friends in how they can do it using a couple buddies and a couple 100' (or 300') tapes for far less than hiring a surveyor (for what they wanted to do).?ÿ I didn't hear this guy advertising any service.?ÿ He may have interest in his app and, like others have noted, it may get you within 30' using public GPS and published GIS, certainly not within a hula hoop, but he actually does note that his app isn't perfect and that for a complete picture recommends getting a survey done by a licensed pro.?ÿ In many cases 30' is close enough to find something.?ÿ I was visiting a friend in MI's UP recently and used a free app to walk around his lake front forest and roughly locate property.?ÿ Nothing wrong with this, IMO.

That wouldn't be anything out of the ordinary these days. ????
@norm Hula hoop is the new error ellipse.
Historic boundaries and conservation efforts.
You realize there are some geezers around here who experienced 'JUST GOTTA HAVE ONE' way back in 1958 when WHAM-O started producing them and a craze was started.
I was alive but too young to actually successfully work a full-sized model with my little hips.?ÿ They did turn out some smaller hoops, I believe, but, I didn't end up with one.?ÿ Big sister had two hula hoops as she was 11 at the time.
THRAC ALERT
The most annoying fad of all time was Clackers (or whatever they were called in your area)
