"We know what surveying costs already, they should never cost over $300."

You don't hear it as much as you used to, but back when I started it seemed like every old sidewalk inspector "used to survey in the WPA" (or CCC).

On an onsite with the BLM and a exploration company.
This Co. had very little Federal Acreage so they weren't used to dealing with the BLM and the NRS's with the BLM office weren't used to dealing with them.
This company also practiced low impact drilling and this onsite they didn't plan a drilling pad.

NRS; “well first you need to move your pits”
Driller; “No, I want them there”.
NRS; “they have to be uphill (so the pits would be in cut when the pad is built) and you have them downhill”.
Driller; “lady, I have tried and tried but I just can't get that water to flow uphill”

Me: under my breath; “this is going to be a long, long day”.

My son works for Baseline Engineers.

One job site he worked on had some mexicans doing the lanscaping, a couple of times their truck was in the way. The second time he over heard them say, Hey, those Bass-A-Leen guys need us to move our truck again.:-)

After hearing Greg pound an iron pipe into some very hard ground the neighbor walks up and asks "Did you put that there?"

I said "No, they grow between September and October" ( end of a 14 hr day)

He says "Im calling the police"

Nosy Neighbor: Why are you looking in my yard?

ME: I need to find more corners than just on the property I am surveying. So says the State

NN: NOT in my yard you aren't. You're trespassing! I am Calling the police.

ME: Please do.

NN: ????What???

Of course during all of this I am standing in the Street ROW and am no way trespassing. But NN doesn't know this. I have absolutely no problem dealing with the PD.

I had a similar conversation with a retired civil engineer. It was on a road with a wide right of way and narrow improvements so it looked like I was in his yard or would have looked that way to a lay person, but he was really irate even when I tried to explain that I was standing in public right of way looking for front lot corner monuments.

Like Brad and Mark, I don't hear this as much anymore...

But there was always an old timer who would "bird dog" us, and let us know he "did a little surveying" in the war.

I would always slow down a little and let the guy "help" us.

Tell NN: I need to know where your property corners are so your neighbor doesn't get more land than he should.

That describes the road in front of my house. 80' ROW and 30' BTB on the curbs. Just as far from the back of curb to the property line as it is from the property line to the house.

One day I was sick and didn't go to work. My party chief told me about the landowner they worked for that day. This was in rural southern Va. The guy looked like the average white feller you find down there.

The client was having the crew stake out a house to be oriented correctly for passive solar advantages. The PC thought "this guy is kind of progressive, putting in a passive solar house" (this was the early 90's).

The PC noticed the guy was carrying, not unusual for the area. He said something like "nice weapon you have there".

The client replied "one day n****rs will be killing white people in the street, and I'm gonna be ready."
