Hello: I am new to this forum and looking for information. I have two (of course) Tellurometers and have no information about them. They seem to be quite rare. I would like to set them up and see them work. Does anybody have a manual for this model or a repair manual. If none is available, could someone please describe the settings and functions of the different controls. I assume they need repair but need to know how to work them. I am a technician and work on tube equipment so that is not a problem. I just would rather they not be mantle pieces. Thanks for any help at all. James

Here you go! Assuming your instrument looks like this:

https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc ="s&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CAcQjRw&url= http://www.xnatmap.org/adnm/docs/recolls/MRA2.htm&ei=41eDVdSRGcfdoATzp5moCA&psig=AFQjCNHYz6j1Ugb6tZza2XuSylny_EcPGA&ust=143475745187094 6"

The instructions are at:

http://www.xnatmap.org/adnm/ops/specs/raftrain/chaps.htm#t400

This link may be the only one on the Web that is comprehensive. You might send a note of thanks to those crazy Aussies at [email protected]

If you want a copy of the actual original User's Manual with provenance you can order paper copy of an original which the UK National Archives possesses:

http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C11511989

But it'll be roughly two bucks a page, four bucks a page for 300dpi digitals or 35 bucks a page for research grade certified photographic resolution, plus their time finding the original, estimate preparation, shipping and handling charges. Given Britain's glacial bureaucracy and complications it could take months and cost much more than you bargained for.

For those who don't care about early microwave distancing equipment, it's an interesting read concerning how difficult operating this equipment properly was. I spent time laboring over a Tellurometer CA-1000

It was nowhere near the pain or weight to operate compared to a MRA2 (never seen or handled one) but still a hassle. But being able to close 20 mile long terrestrial traverses up two different ridges with a tight distance was incredibly sweet. When done properly on long lines the ppm accuracy was incredible back then. Of course GPS has made all such tools obsolete.

I have a couple of MR-3's and have the Manuals for these somewhere. What is the difference between the MR-2 and MR-3 units?

Thank you very much Mike. I printed out the instructions at the link you sent me and it is just what I was looking for.

Charles. I don't know the difference between them. The link Mike gave me had an instruction manual now I can operate these units and know what I am doing. Again, thanks for the replies and help. James

I went to the site posted above and looked at the pictures of the MR-2's. There is quite a differrence in thr MR-2 and MR-3 units. The MR-3's are an enclosed case and dosen't have the dish or external diode. The 1st Tellurometers that I used were similar to the MR-2 with the dish and external diode, but had a rubber tube you had to attach to the front face over a screen that you read the trailing edge of a green circular line to obtain the distance readings. The MR-3's were a big improvement insofar as obtaining the distance readings, as you read the data off a dial on the face of the unit. It took about 45 minutes to an hour to take a set of readings with one unit being the master and the other unit a remote and making a total of 8 readings and then the remote unit switching to the master unit and your unit being the remote and taking another set of 8 readings. Also there were some other little things to do, like taking wet and dry bulb thermometer readings. It's been 40 years since I've used the units that I have, so don't recall all the items on the checklist that needed to be done.

Those were the days.
They were behemoth machines, not for light of frame, both human and tripodic.
Not to mention the battery!

Then there was the CA1000.
Lightweight, brilliant for tripping across mountains.
The clearest form of voice communication I've ever experienced. So long as it didn't lose signal whilst earphones plugged in. Ouch!
