Discovered I had somehow accidentally locked the screen on my iphone and couldn't rotate to get the calculator option with all the trig functions, etc..?ÿ Had no idea how that happened or how to unlock it.?ÿ So, no calculator.
@holy-cow?ÿ yeah. about a week ago three neighbors standing outside by the vehicles.?ÿ Neighbor over there holding his $800 smartphone absolutely lost that his bluetooth connection wouldn't open his Mercedes.?ÿ Holding a conversation with him while holding my truck key in one hand.?ÿ
As much as I loooooove technology, I really haaaaaaate some of this crap that will leave you helpless when it fails.

@wendell?ÿ
There's useful technology and then technology just because it can be done.?ÿ What advantage is there in relying on a complicated device like a phone to do the job of a simple key or fob? What if he wants to let someone else drive the car, say to get an oil change or repair, does he have to help them program something in their phone?
Wendell ,?ÿ I still have?ÿ my Log books. Some to 23 places just in case I need a little extra accuracy.

@bill93 As someone that has a car that can be unlocked by a phone, it is pretty great. My car unlocks automatically when I walk up to it. It locks automatically when I walk away. My family members all can do the same with their phones. If I want to lend it to someone, I give them one of the credit card keys that I have for it. I thought that it was dumb too until I had one.
All this dependence on high technology brings to mind the person who got caught on an escalator when it stopped.

What to do if you get caught on a stopped escalator:
1. Remain calm, do not panic.
2. Get out your smartphone and Google ??I am caught on a stopped escalator, what should I do??
edit: good lord! I googled it, broken escalators should not be used as stairs because the riser and tread dimensions don??t comply with the building code. So I can only conclude if the escalator breaks down, the riders should wait for repair or rescue.
Relating this post to the Old School Skills post - I run a HP41CX simulator app on my iPhone and use it every day. The keyboard and functionality were engrained in my head while in college in the mid 80??s.?ÿ
Step 2 is actually to yell out at those ahead of you who are standing around in disbelief to move their a$$e$ or get shoved to the side.
@holy-cow New Yorkers have this figured out. Ride right, walk left.
think Apollo 13 - what would have done
Maybe wear one of these around your neck, otherwise it should fit in a vest pocket:
Or remember the functions for 0, 30, 45, and 90 degrees and the half angle, double angel. and sum of angles formulas. Guess at the rest.
Back in the olden days, (somewhere between fire and the wheel) surveyors had to use something called a vernier which was part of an instrument called a transit, so as to achieve decent angular measurement. I took a ??slide rule? (what??s that?) course as an elective in high school which was a tremendous help in understanding verniers. ?????ÿ
@bushaxe I use an app on my cell phone that emulates the HP 15C.?ÿ I use it almost every day and it works great!

Wow. Never saw one of those.
