Hi guys!

I noticed that SurvCE can only support up to 9 characters for point IDs. Is there a way to increase this, say 20 characters?

Thank you.

SurvCE 5.04 does support much longer point IDs using the new CRDB job file format. Just choose CRDB file format when you start a new job.

Why would you need a 20 character point id?

This really hits home for me, as I am forced to use 8 or 9 character point ids every day as that is what is expected from the higher ups. It is incredibly frustrating.

So for 20 characters, think about the hassle of doing a simple inverse. Even if you select the by list, your screen is only so big for that line of information.

And of course the alternative is manual input, and I can't imagine typing in 40 characters just to get a simple bearing/dist.

If you need that much information, I would suggest you take well written manual notes or carry a mini voice recorder with you.

8 character point ID and file name is a carryover from DOS, HP41 and HP48 file structure.

It annoys me greatly when I download coordinates into CADD and the descriptors are any longer.

I would like another field added to the mix called MEMO where a long and rather detailed amount of information and/or data can be attributed to that point number.

Doing mine, property, and detailed surveys for a single client for more than 10 years would result to clashing control point names. Consolidating all survey works (to provide development history) into a single environment like in Leica GeoOffice is a very challenging and tedious task as clashing point IDs can cause position tampering if not handled properly. This prompted me to device my own point naming convention to ensure point id uniqueness. The idea was to provide in the point id ability to readily identify installation date, general location, company code name, department, etc. This requires a minimum of 16 character width point id. Using description field instead forfeits the ability to use symbols in SurvCE thus leaving point id the only venue.
