Went out today with a plan, job was to measure up a multi storey apartment block - things seemed to be going alright until I tried to check into some previously recorded points - all three pointed to the backsight tripod 200m away. Shite! I don??t do this sort of stuff enough to remember that the robot tends to favour the backsight prism above all else. Even when you think it??s lookin at you, it??s probably found that big ol prism on the tripod. Damn. Still got some stuff done but I learnt that lesson again.
Early in my robot days I took over 60 shots to the backsight before realizing what was going on.?ÿ I'd probably be doing that still if I hadn't changed my approach such that I rarely set out a fixed backsight anymore.?ÿ These days the backsight is just another shot with the pole.
I might have you beat with around 70 shots on a stop sign. It is not just the backsight you have to worry about.
Yes that??s how I normally operate too, just thought I??d do the right thing for once on a big job, having a fixed check point and look where it got me ????
The good thing is now a days the linework is on the collector so you can immediately see when things are whack.
This is why I don't mind the new larger DCs and bigger screens...being able to see the observation dialog plus a map with your location and where the robot is looking, at the same time, is a wonderful thing.

Although I have been asking equipment reps and dealers for years why there isn't a built-in warning whenever an observation?ÿ (specifically not named as your backsight name) is within X distance of your backsight. Or add a warning whenever X (user-defined number) of consecutive topographic observations are within a few tenths of each other...
Would be very easy to implement, and could be turned on or off by the user depending on task.
thats a seriously good idea, would save much heartache in the field. I still wonder that there is quite a big communication gap between the equipment/software companies and the field surveyors. Topcon magnet has some infuriating quirks, but overall it works ok. Don??t know about much about the others?ÿ
I have started using Leica Captivate and it will not store another shot on the backsight and will warn you if two consecutive shots are close together.?ÿ The search function will not lock on the backsight when searching for the pole if you are already setup.?ÿ
In another recent thread I recommended that once control ties were finished to put away the target tripods before proceeding with topo. This thing with getting hung on the backsight glass is one of the many reasons to do that.
Someone told me you can setup Carlson to warn you of back sight shots, but I haven??t taken the time to find that option yet.?ÿ
I think we've all been there before.
Now I usually flip the prism around if I'm going to be at a setup for a while.?ÿ That way I still have a BS to check, reflectorlessly, and it doesn't take any random SS on my BS
Still learning the same learnings. I call these rookie mistakes when I still make them after nearly forty years.
