Picture of a recently completed interchange in Los Angeles County (Santa Clarita Valley) incorporating dual multi-lane modern roundabouts. The location is Interstate 5 and Halsey Canyon Road. The project was a Public-Private Partnership funded with developer fees and local, state and federal transportation funding. The price tag was about $45M.

I'd be willing to bet money that was created by an "otherworldly" engineer....
I hope it's not peak traffic time when the ships land.

Three of my big projects (big for me) in recent few years involve roundabouts. I have done all the mapping and layout.
On St. Thomas, Mandella Circle near the cruise ship dock was created about 20 years ago I think. For traffic frow it was a failure and is now back to a conventional intersection with traffic lights and about 10 lanes total.
On St. John the main intersection just out of town was a horrible problem. Big trucks had to back up about 200 feet to get around the gas station in the middle. It's now a circle thats very sucessful. FHA EFLHD engineers did a great job fitting it into a tight space on a the side of a hill.
On St. Thomas near the hospital there is a very congested double T intersection that has several design solutions being worked on including a multilane roundabout.
When we were in England, I noticed all of the roundabouts. Traffic never stopped and flowed fairly well, even in the more urban areas except Picadilly Circus. I don't think anything could help that area.
I like roundabouts and hate lights.
Does the one at the left have a rain garden in it? Seem like that's sort of the trend these days.
Did you mean.............not the YES version?
Yes
Know the interchange well Dennis. Glad to see it is completed so I don't have to wade through the construction any longer. I first encountered Roundabouts while living in Mass. Didn't know what to think at first, but grew to like them.
Roundabouts are all the rage in the Portland area. I can think of at least three and know of another in the planning stages.
Drainage around these things is a design challenge.
I didn't think Mass. had roundabouts. When I was there many years ago I was told they were rotaries.
Is it a bag or a sack? Soda, pop, or coke (no capital)? Tom ay to or tom ahh to?
traffic circle, round about, rotary, what's the difference? It's all a pain in the rear for those that don't know how to use them...
Mass is alive and well and still building rotary's...
Durned confusing when combined with right-hand drive cars. Spent some time in Port of Spain, Trinidad some decades ago, and every time I got to one, I had to pause and think which way to go.
Roundabout - Not the YES version
I had to pause and think which way to go
As I understand it, that is why they are so much safer than traffic lights.
No. It was pre-landscape in the photo. Although the finished landscaping is a native drought tolerant plant pallet.
By gosh, you are absolutely right SC. Don't know what I was thinking...

The 5 Bridge & Major Thoroughfare Districts I manage for the County have helped fund all of the improved interchanges along the I-5 in the Santa Clarita Valley: Lyons Avenue, McBean Parkway, Valencia Blvd, Magic Mountain Pkwy, SR 126 and Hasley Canyon Rd. The remaining two will be Parker Road and Lake Hughes Rd as development expands in the Castaic area. The Subdivision Map Act autherizes the creation of these development fee districts.
We are in the process of forming a 6th one called the Westside District for development of Newhall Ranch (22,000 residential units) behind 6 Flags Park
Roundabout - Not the YES version
Much much fewer fatal injury and pedestrian accidents due to the reduced speeds, although depending on the communities familiarity with modern roundabouts, the minor side swipe type of accidents can increase during the early opening period.
