An article in the New York Times (warning:  paywall) alludes to this technology that's being developed by the Aussie firm Q-CTRL.  They claim 100x improvement of drift over conventional inertial sensors using their quantum sensors and associated software.

I expect practical application for surveyors is a long way off, but the idea of a man-portable survey-grade position sensor sounds more feasible than ever.
