The post about the Javad pin finder got me thinking that it would be awful handy to have something like that for when the iron you found is not "the one" and your detector is back in the truck.
Has anyone tried one of these?

http://www.garrett.com/hobbysite/hbby_pro-pointer_at_main_en.aspx

Seems pretty short range, but if you just needed to poke around a pre-calculated area it might do the job.

I have a pinpointer that goes with me most places. It's great for corners near metal fence posts, but the range is about 0.15'. It's main purpose is to keep you from scraping up or missing valuable objects like coins or jewelry.

I also have a garret pinpointer. Definitely has a very short range.

I have asked Shawn Billings, and encouraged the Javad bunch, to MAKE an app, that would allow you to use the Javad Metal Detector, with a smart phone. Also, I'd like to see a small mini handle, that HOLDS the cell phone, (like a selfie stick holds a cell phone) and a little threaded screw to attach the Javad detector. This way, it would function alot like a "normal" detector, when desired. It could be 30" or 40" long.
But, you could leave the little handle device, (with the cell phone holder), in the ATV, or truck.
And go to the boonies. You could leave the cell phone in your pocket, and use just audio.
I'm trying to make it so that somebody with ONLY Javad, does not need another metal detector.
I don't know if they will do it, but I have asked for it.

Nate

I've used my iphone's compass in a pinch a few times. Turn it on and hover a bit off the ground and you will get it to spin pretty good if pass over an iron.
try it next time you recover one the right way.

I don't know if Javad has figured it out yet, but, if he does not make an app for his little bitty metal detector, he forces us to carry our old one too.
Drive up to job, grab metal detector, and go searching, and digging etc.
But, with his paradigm, we have to BOOT UP the LS, and assemble it, before we can use it. Boot up takes about 1 minute, or 1-1/2 minutes.
After booted, you can keep using it. But, now we HAVE to tote the LS with is, to use the tip.
We want to be able to USE the tip, independent of the LS.

Exactly. It does not replace old yeller. I use it up against fence posts and in mud or water. It will narrow down a spot before chiseling into pavement. It can be tuned to be less discriminating to get a little more depth but not much.

I carry and use a White's pinpointer. http://www.kellycodetectors.com/catalog/bullseye-trx-waterproof-pinpointer . It has an adjustable range of about 9 inches. Handy to carry and great to use around fences and other interferences.

That is a Dip Needle, used to find monuments back in the day. The Dip Needle is a compass pivoted to move in the plane containing the magnetic field vector of the earth. It will then show the angle which the magnetic field makes with the vertical.

We used to use one for locating monuments when I was on my first survey crew after I got out of the Army. Have never used one since.
