State and national legislative reform. I've not been personally involved at the national level, but the laws that govern what we do every day in Kentucky are somewhat malleable, which amazed me to no end when I shook the governor's hand after helping to get a new surveying law passed.

And back to what you would like them to do with the money. "Ask not what your state society can do for you but what you can do for your state society" Paying dues is great but attending meetings, being on committees, caring what happens to your profession. Post your opinions here, then go to the meetings and voice your opinions about how to spend that money, take over a treasurer position and actually spend it.

Sometimes when I read things about NSPS, I feel like I would be helping a charity.

Perhaps there is a chicken/egg thing here. If the societies had some direction, more people might be interested in participating.

NSPS has had very limited resources in the past. Perhaps with this new structure that will change.

1. Scholarship fund.
State: We already do this quite adequately.
NSPS: Not sure, but maybe they could help provide support to the states.

2. Standards of Practice.
State: Yes we need to do this. We hopefully will be working on this in the near future.
NSPS: Not needed at the national level.

3. CAD Standards.
State: NO!
NSPS: No.

4. Sponsor an on-line degree program.
State: Not feasible at the state level.
NSPS: Definitely. At least provide for on-line courses if not an accredited degree.

5. Sponsor CFEDS.
State: No.
NSPS: No, not unless the results are dramatically reduced costs, and the benefits of having this are tangible.

6. Sponsor a CFEDS-like program for geodetic/control surveying.
State: NO.
NSPS: Yes, this could be beneficial if done properly.

7. Police the profession.
State: We definitely need to be a self-governed profession ASAP.
NSPS: NO.

I'm sure I could come up with a few more, but I'm tired of typing and the game is on. 😉

1 -7 not so much.

8. Educate the public about the importance of having a survey (Not mortgage report) when they buy a home.

9. Educate the Title Companies and Lenders to stop using Mortgage Reports and start requiring an ALTA survey with home purchase.
