There is a new app called 3dcompass for those out there with an android phone. It shows a compass, lat and long, street view, map view, on one screen and takes a acreenshot of all.

Is the Android a touch screen? I have not researched them and you and Wendell both have them it seems. I bought an iPad which I really like so I've been considering a new iPhone.

They both seem to have a lot of apps for them.

The iPad is not really a computer but for e-mails, web surfing and pictures then it's the bomb.

Yes. Android, developed by Google, is a direct competitor to iPhone except that you can get Android on many different phones across several wireless companies. This means a much wider support base and, eventually, more apps (if they haven't already surpassed Apple). Android is also open, meaning you don't have a "parent" deciding which apps you can have and which you cannot.

Thanks Wendell. I just love the touch screen on the iPad. The iPhone is supported by ATT which is my carrier. That was just a small reason though. My agreement has run out so I can get a refurb iPhone for a very low cost if I re-up with them. They seem to be the most consistent in my little neck of the woods.

There are some really nice GPS apps for both phones but the iPhone was the first that ESRI developed for with their new ArcGIS website. I use it a lot on the iPad and want to develop some mobile apps on a phone for mobile collections. They are working on the API for other phones and likely the Android.

I was also thinking about the ability to easily tether or link a phone with the iPad using the larger screen for mapping. I did not get the 3G/4G iPad so I would need to do this with the bluetooth or get a later version iPad.

It just seems all this stuff is moving so fast and new versions of the phones and the apps come out daily.

But thanks for the information.

Windows Phone 7 coming out in a couple months too. Supposed to compete head-to-head w/ the Android platform. Apple's in its own little world, a very successful one, but really not as functional (other than apps & similar gee-gaws) as the other platforms / smart phones. But people love 'em!

Deral: I have an iPhone and love it.

Next month I should be getting a Droid X from Verizon to use for work..so I will have both to play with.

I upgraded my iPhone o/s to the new o/s4 last week and like it. the georeferencing of photos is very cool.

TRY before YOU BUY.....the new iPhone 4's are supposed to support tethering...and maybe they do...but I think they are limited to what Steve Jobs wants you to tether to. I tried to use a brand new iPhone as a VRS modem a couple of weeks ago and could not get it to work.

It could have been me....but I don't think it was.

Full disclosure notice....I have 2 Macbooks at home and my iPhone and I love it...and I would have an iPad in a heartbeat if I could justify it at all....

Hmmm... how do I get a hold of that? I haven't received any update notifications.

Note that the GDocs app displays PDF files quite nicely. 🙂

Force update to 2.2 Froyo

Here is where you get the file for Flash 10.1:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=HO8UZSDW

Once you get that done type about:debug in the stock browser and hit go.
Go to menu > settings and at the very bottom change the UI to desktop instead of android.

Yay! Thanks for the help. I got myself all updated and even got Flash installed. But the last part (above) regarding "about:debug" doesn't do anything. I type it into the browser and hit Go and it doesn't do anything. What is it supposed to do? For the record, I tested a website with Flash on it and it worked fine without this last step.

It changes the default User Interface to Desktop PC so your browser will go to the "Full Website" rather than the "Mobile" version of websites. Most of the "mobile" versions have the flash and other multimedia stripped out. I don't know about your experience but Froyo runs much snappier on my Droid than 2.1 did. BTW after any update is is good to do a battery pull just to get a good reset IMO.

You should check out Adobe showcase in the market.

Just make sure you type about:debug in the address bar and not the search bar. Some people said they had to do a long press and "open" on the text to get it to work.
