I was thinking about the thread on GPS vs GPS plus Conventional which discussed urban GPS, and the scolding I got for even asking about whether a long term average was biased by multipath, when I drove by this setup this afternoon. I circled a few blocks but didn't see a rover or chariot.
Kinda makes me wonder what accuracy they are getting with the hill (topped by chain link fence), power lines, and brush across the road.
The point it was set up on appeared to be an uncapped 5/8 rebar, (but I didn't examine it closely enough to describe it to Texas standards ).
Some would label that a nearly perfect location. Others, not so much.
no problem there, with what looks like a R-8
probably with a 13deg setting
Looks okay to me.
Not ideal, but we don't live in a perfect world.
If I have to put a base up somewhere that I'm not overly happy with, I just do a few more checks.

lol. good one.
Get a snapshot of the ribs, and have a tape measure by it to have a sense of scale. Perhaps dig it up and see if you can find the rebar number imprinted on it. See if you can have it evaluated for age.
Not the worst place, I suppose. Except that the pictured background leaves me wondering if there isn't a much, much better place quite nearby.
Plus I'd prefer to get the base a little further from the road, for the sake of safety, and for the sake of deterring theft.
Lots better than I had to work with today.;-)

Chain link fences are much more problematic when they are less than about 20 ft. from the antenna as they are excellent reflectors of the L1 frequency signal. The power lines look like a negligible obstruction.
Generally, that would qualify as a rural setup as far as I'm concerned. I take it that there are no urban settings in Iowa like this:
Everything looks ok.
If there were a caravan or two of 18 wheelers passing from time to time, there would be cycle slips but that would be easily corrected.
this location isn't tripping any big alarms for me.
