And I got my "Pincushion" book!

Another Book Recommendation
I recently had my Kindle read Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us to me. I recommend it, especially for those in management positions.
I am reading "Stalin, The Court of the Red Czar" right now.
It is a little hard keeping up with all of his minions but he murdered most of them anyway.
Essentially what happened is a group of ideological organized criminals took over the Russian Empire in October 1917. In the 1930s Stalin started eliminating most of the Party membership.
Stalin and Lucas in the same thread, hmmm.....
"Undoubtedly, our path is not of the easiest; but, just as undoubtedly, we are not to be frightened by difficulties. Paraphrasing from the well-known words of Luther, Russia might say: ‘Here I stand on the frontier between the old, capitalist world and the new, socialist world. Here on this frontier I unite the efforts of the proletarians of the West and of the peasantry of the East in order to shatter the old world. May the god of history be my aid!"
— Joseph Stalin

Paraphrasing from the well-known words of Luther, the surveying profession might say: ‘Here I stand on the frontier between the old, the deed staking technician and the new, the advocate for the one true line. Here on this frontier I unite the efforts of the PLSS of the West and of the metes and bounds of the East in order to shatter the old world. May the god of history be my aid!"

Stalin went to seminary and he formed a parallel religion, Stalinism.
Keith:
I went to a Dennis Mouland Seminar Friday the 19th in Flagstaff, where he went through the 10 most important changes in the 2009 Manual. There was a drawing on the attendees nsmes out of the hat for a new, wrapped in celophane, 2009 Manual. My name was the one drawn. Since I already had a copy, and the BLM Cadastral Surveyor/Training Coordinator that was the one that presented the book to me gave me the option to trade it for another publication. I said that I would like a copy of Jim Simpson's Book, River & Lake Boundaries. Like you, in the mail today was a brand new, wrapped in celophane, Jim Simpson, Second Edition, River & Lake Boundaries Manual.
I don't know if I want to unwrap it or not. :>), but in order to see what's in it, I guess I'm going to have to open it up.
I Applaud Your Effort, Mr. Fleming
Perhaps just a little more well-conceived than executed, but a nice achievement all in all:-)

I'm an "idea" guy, I plan to leave the implementation to my staff as soon as I can afford one.

I was just being a smartass, of course. You do well without a staff.

Hey Charles, you got the best deal! Jims book is a must if you survey around water at all.
We stopped at Jim and Ruth's house last year and they had lunch for us and had a very good visit. They have been good friends for a long long time.

The precursors to the current "Russian Mafia", Stalin and his cohorts. He Killed more of his own countrymen than Hitler ever thought of killing. Those were very bad people.

Stalin, Lucas and Morrison. I think they're all saying the same thing.

You missed the picnic, but that manual was a raffle prize - still in the wrapper. Jason won it, but since he has a few at the county he gave it to one of the Northern Chapter members (don't know him). He was quite happy to receive it.
Fun time too. You should have seen Fondren in his APLS doo rag he won...lol

I would have liked to have attended the "picinic" after the Board Meeting, but I had a 6 hour drive ahead of me in order to get home before it got real late. It was a little after 7:40 when I pulled into the driveway. I am glad that someone got the Manual that did not have one. I started looking through my Jim Simpson book last night. From what I can see at first glance, anyone that does not have one should get it, PLSS & the "Leaps & Bounds states. Appears to be a wealth of information for the surveyor.
Simpson's Book
There are several good books dealing with water boundaries, but Simpson's is the best in my opinion.

Simpson's Book
Jerry,
I agree...even though I 'only' have the first edition. This book, with the autographs, is one of my prized possessions...and Mr. Simpson asking my opinion, one of my fondest memories. Well, not so much asking my opinion as quizzing me...

I know Mark...but the Google copy does not have my margin notes nor Jim Simpson's autograph...

Simpson's Book
I don't think that ebooks will ever completely replace the venerable hard copy.
Simpson's Book & Laughlin
Dan, Jim is doing quite well at the moment. It has been a week since I talked with him. I need to call again; maybe tomorrow. We really did enjoy that week in Laughlin with a great group of surveyors. You and Griz kept it lively and the night discussions were just as good or maybe even better. Jim and I still can't have a very long conversation before it turns to water boundaries. Guess it is in our blood forever.
Hope all is well with you.
