I didn't see an equipment problems category so I hope I am posting in the right place. ?ÿSome of you helped me along in my search for a Total Station with advice, many thanks for that help. ?ÿOn Wednesday I picked up a Leica TS12, with a CS15, and an MH16 handle, with a 10 day return privilege at a dealer; all 3 are 2014-2015 vintage and in decent physical shape (except for the repaired prism, known problem, thanks in particular for the help on that!). ?ÿAll seemed well in the demo at the shop, robotics work, etc, and with my preliminary checkout of the pieces here, until I realized that when running alone, without the CS15 connected, that the TS12 touchscreen was not working, either with a stylus or with my finger.
Still not working after I went into the menus with the function keys, etc, and found a toggle ostensibly for turning the touchscreen on and off. ?ÿNo effect.
I tried all the usual computer tricks: rebooting, on off, standing on my head while reading Jane Austen, etc.
?ÿ
All I have tried seems to be working when using the CS15, etc, but nothing seems to activate the TS12 touchscreen. ?ÿIt is the same whether they are tied in or using the TS12 alone.
Has anyone encountered this problem? ?ÿI am trying to get in touch with Allen Precision whom they recommended for any future service and with the Leica rep that my seller deals with (but he is not involved with the total station side, only with lasers and related). ?ÿDoes anyone have a contact who might answer?
Many thanks, hoping to make this deal work.
Jim
Did you try removing the battery for a few minutes and them putting it back in?
Moisture. Put in a really dry place for a couple days.
?ÿ
Not trying to be a wise guy, but you were using the TS12 when you toggled the touch screen on and off.?ÿ If it is a moisture issue then you have bigger problems, that would imply the instrument is not sealed correctly.?ÿ I've never had a touch screen go out because of moisture issues here in the Pacific northwet.
wise guy, but you were using the TS12 when you toggled the touch screen on and off.
I inferred that he did that with a button rather than the touch screen.
Touchscreen has not worked at all on the TS12. Everything I have done with the screen, with the "touchscreen on/off" toggle has been by using the keypad function keys and the return key.
One good discovery is that replacing the screen would probably not require sending the machine back. The assembly is held by six Allen screws, and I looked inside and found it connects with only one small ribbon cable. ?ÿThat's assuming that the whole assembly would be the replacement part, not allowing for the possibility that there might be a screen only which can be replaced, not in combination with the keys.
We have a German made pair of combi-steamer ovens in our restaurant, and their maker loves those ribbon cables as well. They're a pain to get loose and re-attach, very delicate and very tricky. But they don't require the skill of a brain surgeon.
There are replacement keyboards for data collectors on eBay, just happened to see them while looking around for total stations. I'll have to see if there are any replacement touchscreen assemblies. ?ÿThe seller has already proffered that they will make it right if the touchscreen needs to be replaced. ?ÿThey did contact the original owner who professed no knowledge of a dead touchscreen, but also stated that he thinks he rarely did anything without the data collector. ?ÿGiven that the time and date are ridiculously off, that seems likely; unless it's due to a bad CMOS battery.
New discovery: one of the two batteries went from half to zero, abruptly. That we can fix.
I wasn't actually using it, I was just exploring the menus and trying to get the touchscreen to come on thinking I had mysteriously turned it off with a careless touch or function keep press.
Just a remote possibility, but after you toggle the touch screen on, there may be a "Cont" (Continue) button, that you have to press to make it stick. You don't just press Enter or X or Back. Probably not the problem, but..
Certainly worth checking. ?ÿApparently that was mentioned by Allen Precision when the dealer contacted them, supposing that perhaps a seal had failed [edited, had not head]. Relative humidity here is pretty low, and the shop had it in conditioned space; probably extra dry like most places during the winter time. It appears to not have been in the field for 1-1.5 yrs.
As a final check, I removed the screen assembly from the case (6 allen screws, using the included ?ÿ wrench, so it must be as Frau Leica intended). ?ÿIt appears to be completely dry and in good condition.

???I had high hopes when I read your post, but alas, no...Curses, foiled again???ú????.
I may have been miss-interoperated, I was just making sure you were in fact using the TS12 to toggle the touch screen on and off versus the CS15.?ÿ I have gotten similar calls for crews (on other issues) only to find they were using the wrong piece of hardware to make the required corrections.
I have had a couple of screens loose their touch screen capability.?ÿ Its about $500 to get it replaced, keyboard included.?ÿ It sounds like you have already opened it up.?ÿ Sealing it back up would be my only concern.
While we are on the subject...Can someone tell me what these cards are, which came with my Leica TS12?
2 of them, showing back n front. ?ÿThe upper left corner of the back side shows "2 gb".
They look for all the world like luggage tags!
They are just USB drives containing the manuals and such.
I wish accessing the TS12 touch screen was this simple:
I fear mine is bad.
