This has been a popular thread in the past. There are many Javad haters on the board.

That being said, we have 10 Javad Triumph 1's. The crews seem to prefer the Javad to the Trimble R8-3's.
Javad's tech support isn't the best, and the 35watt radio doesn't pump as far as the competition...but they get fix everywhere, and they're relatively inexpensive. I'd say for 10 grand a head, you can't go wrong.

Personally, I would avoid Javad just because of his arrogant position on the Light Squared issue. If it were free, I'd take them, so my avoidance is not all consuming.

Granted, the price is a little higher, but I've been very interested in the Carlson tablet with GPS. Add the soon to be released Total Station on a Stick and you'll have an awesome system.

Hijack ... what is the total station on a stick?

That sounds interesting ... what is it?

Looks interesting, but he says "GIS" too many times for me to think that was intended for survey grade. But like everything else, survey grade will probably be just around the corner.

In all fairness, this was during the GIS part of the show. 500 Surveyors and 15,000 GIS guys... Even if you had the perfect Survey system, you'd be inclined to rave about the GIS applications.

GIS

Good point. My main concern is how does it encode the angle? Magnetic north? And I noticed him tilting the rod slightly to move the pointer up and down to the point of interest, which I don't think a single GPS can account for. Now put that in the GPS umbrella thing that Javid sells, and you'll probaby have something survey grade-ish, that can meansure the angles better, and accound for tilt (see the conversation came full circle back to Javad 😛 ).

GIS

i believe you have to backsight something for the horizontal angle. put this rig on a bipod and you have less of an issue with tilt.
bruce is an engineer. (not going any further on that)
there are certain applications this will be great for:
Trees. Who the heck wants to locate a tree with GPS? You have the multipath concern. You can use any of the offset commands, but your location is not perfect as the tree is not perfect. This will get you within the trunk, which is what you typically need anyhow.
Utility Poles.
Fire Hydrants.
Even utility marks - how close can those be?
Wetland flags, or the tree they are tied to.

Perfect? No. Worth the investment? Probably. Cool? Yes. It still beats the accuracy of stadia.

I used a Nikon Nivo with pretty good success in a similar way. No doubt that if someone actually developed a tiny total station to fix on a pole under a 360 prism or RTK, it would sell.

American Surveyor Nikon Nivo Review

As for the original question. I've still not found a receiver that produces better precision that the Triumph 1 I reviewed a few years ago. Very elegant. Javad's biggest problem is that of marketing. It's tough to mail order something that costs as much as a family car. People kind of like having a dealer to walk them through it (even if they are cynical of dealers). I also think he's hurting himself with the Lightsquared angle.

I've got Javad Triumphs. I love mine. No complaints and I use the Mesa tablet data collector running Field Genius. Internal radios are great. Solid system. I've had no problems with their technical support. I think their support is even with everyone else. From my experience with other big companies there was always that one or two guys that I had to talk with that only did gps support. Big companies, many employees but only key personal. I saved 45 thousand on my system compared to Leica/Trimble setup.

Thanks everybody for the reviews.
I'm going to look into some more but just kicking around the idea.

Thank again

Javad would be my No. one choice, in new GPS systems. Javad is LIGHT years ahead of the competition. The light squared fiasco is no big deal.

If you can stand a compatible data collector, it is the cat's meaooow...

Me and the Carlson DC did not get along well. But, someday, I will find a dc that sings with Javad, and we gittin married then!

🙂
