but 92 with humidity at 71% and the dewpoint hovering at 80 makes the heat index 110 F here on ol' Cape Cod.... We're on on third day of this and for some funky reason I've been in the field for each of them, and some hard projects, too! Yesterday was spent running cross sections through the marsh, 300'-800' eight times...about a total of 4000', with the fragmities (cat tails) 12' tall!

Today was the wrap up on a little 10 acre topo we're doing for one of our engineering clients. 5 different "encroachments" on the western boundary from the abutting subdivision. One neighbor claims use since 1972! That will ripen if he pursues it. Disgusted with previous survey of property done in 2002 that didn't show a single encroachment!! And, yes, it's obvious they have been there a while.

Here's the back sight from point 28....

for kicks, here's the foresight, it's a little more obvious, I think

And the setup, pointing at the foresight...

It was ALMOST to hot to do this for the third day in a row, but with an early start at 7:30 in the woods, we were done by 2 and back home for lunch.

Yes, I drink water out there, about a gallon this morning...

Sort of makes me nostalgic for the old days in upstate NY.........NOT!

It's between 100 and 105 here in the NYC Metro area today.

Back then, I always called it a day when we hit the third digit, unless we were surveying a lake. 😉

I've only stopped a crew once

due to the heat. In 1980 we had several days with temperatures over 100. On this day we had an afternoon thundershower and the humidity must have been near 100 percent. When a bunch of 20 somethings in good shape can hardly take a step it's time to call it a day.

You definitely never want to move to South Florida then. That's just another day in "Paradise" by South Florida standards. It was 81F at 5AM here... It's 94F out with a feels like of 108F, and that's with the breeze blowing from the ESE at 16mph. It gets worse here in August.

My folks live in Sarasota Fl... and it is cooler there than here in "wonderful" Maryland. Raw temps yesterday, today and forecast for tomorrow 100+ with heat indexes around 115 to 125 area.

It's been in the upper 60's here for the last few days, with some light sprinkles and drizzle, mostly cloudy, most of the time.

Nice sunny day and 68 right now in Puyallup and I'm stuck doing office work.

Everyone thinks it rains here all the time, so don't tell anyone, it's a secret.....;-)

Cheers,
Radar

The difference being

In the Northeast, yes it does get hot...100+...but..it usually lasts only a couple of days at a time, then we get a break.

Where as places like south Florida...its a constant 90+ for months.

hahaha yeah, we have town bylaws around here that prevent me from starting at 5am like I wanted to do.... I was working between two subdivisions and my parcel was only 300' wide, although about 1200' deep...

If i was on the water it would have been a 5am start...

Beef prices

the story I heard is Beef prices will initially go down as Dairy farmers sell their livestock because they can't afford feed in the drought but then they will rise as the shortage comes in due to the heat this summer.

Newton, Were you at the Diesel pump, the Regular pump, or across the street from A.S. Fales & Sons in Cushing? (you can PM me with the response)

Newton & Cee Gee will soon be getting some relief. I see Sunday he might have a high of 78F and Monday he might have a high of 71F with some rain moving into Cushing this week. No breaks in sight for anyone else though!

Keep the Gatorade/Powerade close at hand. (or alternatively, those electrolyte tablets we keep at the office for sweltering hot days in So. Fla., which nobody uses) I used to start the morning with two frozen solid quart bottles of Gatorade, and two fully chilled bottles in my lunch cooler. By lunch, I had finished the two chilled bottles and was into the first of the two slushie frozen bottles, in addition to ice water from the water cooler. The carbs and electrolytes really do help when you're in the swamp all day, but it will never replace being 24 years old. Last summer, I had a contractor working to replace all the sheathing and siding on the second floor of my house during July, August & September. I kept a fully stocked chest cooler with Gatorade quarts on ice for them. While working along side them, I heard plenty of stories about other jobsites they'd worked on over the years where they were up on scaffolding working on Mc Mansions and started getting dizzy and seeing stars working in the heat and humidity. Some of their stories were from only days before they started on my house that summer. One particularly memorable story included a property owner who had the nerve to complain about guys taking a break to get a drink in the shade for 5 minutes on a 95F day with no breeze! Needless to say, as a Surveyor who has worked outside in the So. Fla. heat in the summer, I gave them zero grief about taking a break when they needed a Gatorade in the shade. I've been around someone experiencing heat-stroke. It's not something you soon forget when your buddy passes out beside you.
