We had our Carlson CR2 stolen today off of job site on a busy avenue.
Any advice for dealing with insurance companies on the insurance claim for a 2 year older robot?
I always thought to myself when reading the posts on stolen equipment "man that sucks" and man does it suck!!
So, that's a robot.
I've been working on getting these things in metal.
&imgrefurl=http%3A%2F%2Fseaflo-uk.com%2Fabs-plastic-strong-screw-in-threaded-tent-pegs--5-pegs-peggy-awning-guy-line-300-1334-p.asp&docid=7IBIyUM9RZCj5M&tbnid=J5rbXGV3C0mT-M%3A&vet=10ahUKEwiVl-a1qvXTAhUVzmMKHY5bAF0QMwhmKAEwAQ..i&w=1600&h=1043&bih=755&biw=1536&q=screw%20in%20plastic%20tent%20stakes&ved=0ahUKEwiVl-a1qvXTAhUVzmMKHY5bAF0QMwhmKAEwAQ&iact=mrc&uact=8
I think these are plastic:

anyway, good strong metal screws, with a small cable with lock, to hold it all down. Maybe a long rod through the fastener that screws the inst to the tripod. So it cannot be un screwed.
When setting up in semi public place, screw the legs down, and now it is no longer simple to steal. It's also much more windproof.

Those look good but they won't stop anyone from unscrewing the instrument.
I had a Trimble VX stolen in Niagara Falls, NY last Friday.
That hurts....

What timing. My insurance provider just informed me that they would no longer be providing me insurance because of a couple of claims we had this year. Mind you that I have been giving them 10s of thousands of dollars a year for around 15 years now. The first claim was sizable, I had a Leica ATX1230GG bounce off the road while doing a LiDAR verification project. The replacement was about $30k. The second claim was for a broken axel one of our rigs. I was trying to extract myself from a tight parking lot on a rainy night. I ended up needing to creep up on an extruded curb to wiggle out. What I did not see in the darkness was that the landscaping on the other side of the island had been removed. As the wheel rolled over the curb if fell straight down on it cracking the front axel. The local shop told me it appeared that I may have bent the frame & I was looking at $3k to $4k in repairs. They also said that I should have the insurance company take a look at it before they started working on it. Jump forward, after they are done working on it I find out the total bill was only $1300. The insurance company had already paid their $800. If I had known that it was only $1300 I would have just paid the dam thing.

I'm surprised that they're canceling only on the strength of those two claims. A colleague was told by his insurer that they keep a running tally of premiums versus claims for every insured, and as long as the former substantially exceeds the latter it's in their best interests to continue offering coverage. It sounds like your insurer pulled the plug way sooner than that.

My insurance company did the same thing to me about 8 years ago. I had a claim for a cracked screen on my data collector and a claim for a total station that blew over in a strong wind. If they had continued to cover me they would have been well ahead because I have not had any other equipment damaged since. Now I just put ~$20 aside for each job I do to cover myself and for equipment upgrades/purchases.
I have a relative in the insurance game. He told me that a company will keep you as long as you have not exceeded 85 percent of what you have paid in. The problem I was connected with involved one of my volunteer jobs as a board member for a rural water district. A worker was nailed by a rattlesnake last year, resulting in a hospital bill of $240,000. Per the insurance company's negotiated plan with that hospital it really only cost the insurance company about $95,000. We had not been with that company long enough to have paid anywhere close to that amount, let alone some percent higher. Dropped us like Sonny Liston (that's for you old coots).
Many years ago I ran into a problem with State Farm Insurance on my primary vehicle. It was nearly new at the time. It came with wheel covers that didn't want to stay with the wheels. Two disappeared while I was driving across Illinois and Iowa without making a stop. They were not being stolen. My policy would pay for such things, so I filed about eight claims in two years. As I recall they cost about $40-50 each. Long story short, they wanted to move me into their "bad driver" category and more than double my policy fee. That was about 40 years ago and State Farm Insurance has never made a penny off of me since.

It would be helpful for you to have a statement from an equipment dealer regarding the replacement value, along with some comparables and a new replacement quote. We do this all the time.

Thank you for the advice.

In Florida world we won't even leave a level unattended.
Liston went down at one minute and forty-four seconds in the first round. The fight was stopped at two minutes and twelve seconds. Lewiston, Maine in 1965.
