Is it really as big of a rigamaroar to get registered as a design firm in Illinois as it appears? I started looking through the forms and it certainly doesn't appear to be worth it for a small amount of work.
I work for a big enough company so they take care of it, but yes, its probably just another way to get a buck out of you. You don't really have choice, you have to do it unless you name your company using your name. If your company name is "Tommy Young Surveying" you can skip it, but if you call it "Grade A Surveying", you have to get the company license also.
I'd say that it goes further than trying to get money out of us. It appears to me to be restraint of trade.
Do you live in Illinois? All states are pretty much the same. It is referred to as "protection of the public" to make sure you are authorized to practice. And..of course to pad the state coffers :).

No, I don't live in the state.
Tennessee does not require such a thing.
As a resident of IL I can confirm that everything here is screwed up. Yes I am sure there is a form and a hefty fee for just about everything.

Tommy, a few years ago I worked for a firm in an Atlanta suburb that required a $500 fee for every licensed person in the firm to obtain a business license, and if you were dual licensed it was $1,000. Now THAT'S how you pad the coffers.

WOW! I started my own business in order to do some side work here in Colorado. I applied for a business name on the State's website, I think it cost about $100, and then only $10/yr to keep the name current. The biggest hassle is the annual tax return.
