I have a shovel. In fact I have six or seven shovels.
There is the full size rounded garden shovel my uncle left. It is the M-1 of shovels.
There is a forest green folding shovel. It is great for digging postholes when used in the 90 degree position.
My mom saw that one and gave me a little Gerber folding shovel.
Perhaps the best all-around surveying shovel has been the East German surplus Spetznaz-style shovel, which when sharpened makes a good substitute for a bowie knife, a hatchet, a machete, and a hammer, all in one. I'm on my third one. Don't paint it orange, you'll lose it.
Beyond that, a couple of T-handle "transfer shovels" and a couple of T-handle "drain tile shovels", that I so far have not used for surveying purposes.
If all you have is a hammer, it maybe doesn't occur to you to dig things up before setting new things.
Use the shovel first.
I would hope good 'ole "Hole Digger" has more than one shovel.....unless he sold them all off before he changed his nickname.
Not to worry. A sizeable number in a nice variety of shapes and sizes. At least one for any occasion. All well-used.

In Nebraska, we called it a tile spade and it was the go to digging device in every ones truck.
I would call it a "D" handle though....

It seemed like time for a shovel inventory, considering the amount that has been piled higher and deeper these last few days 🙂
We call that type a "clam gun"
All the makings of a repeatable basis of breakfast!
I laughed a few times over that. good one
sharpshooter around here.
> sharpshooter around here.
That's what we call em too.
This is my shovel, there are many like it but this one is mine. Without me, my shovel is nothing. Without my shovel, I am nothing. 😀
I had a shovel
I was working for this firm about 20+ years ago and the crew lost or left a shovel somewhere..
I was told to go to the local hardware store to replace it. It was a small independent store. I was looking at the shovels and found this nice one. I noticed that it was "Made in Ireland". I never saw any tool that was made in Ireland before so I bought it and told them to charge it to the firm's account.
A few weeks later, the company accountant hounds me down and says "Why Am I buying a shovel worth $40? I told him that it was a really nice shovel. Not much that he could do about it. since it was in used condition at that point.
So the shovel became a prized possession. The crew would always check before leaving a site , if the shovel was in the suburban. Never got lost or mistreated and I did tell them if they lost the shovel that it was going to be $40 to replace it from their pocket.
Bill Dookie
Although I also call it a sharp shooter, I have been told by some that it's "real" name is a Bill Dookie, and apparently it has several names. 😀
I had a shovel
I finally broke down and bought a nice Rigid $35 shovel instead of the $5.99 shovels I usually buy. The handle snapped off after 6 months! Guess I'll stick with the cheapos.
