Power went out and when the Designjet 450c powered back on, the cartridges light continually flashes. I can't get it to accept the black cartidge. I performed the continuity test and the black cartridge failed. Is there any possible quick fixes or is this plotter no longer usable? Thanks.

I used to have the HP450 service manual which I used it to replace the belt. they have a troubleshooting guide in the back. You should be able to find it online.

And here it is.

With word that the power went out, I suspect a surge may have hit the main board. I hope this isn't the case, but with the manual maybe you can troubleshoot and if need be replace the board yourself.

Had that message for a while, it started several weeks after a belt change. Went back in and checked all elect. connections, I think it was reconnecting the ribbon wire set that travels with the carriage that corrected the problem.

I had a power surge go through from the outlet through the 450C to the computer. I then heard this strange woman's voice saying "CPU failure" repeatedly. My computer was toast, but after sitting awhile the 450C started up and has run fine ever since. I have had the belt replaced, but it's still going strong.

Replacement recommendation?

It's confirmed to be a communication issue. In going through the repair procedure, it appears that I could end up buying 3 parts in order to find the problem. 1)trailing cable, 2)carriage 3) module. I don't think the cost and effort is worth it, so I'm looking for a replacement. Just need something to support my low volume production. I quickly looked at the HP Designjet 130...anyone use one and what do they think? I would need to print mylars on occasion also.

Replacement recommendation?

My design jet 500 has been plugging away for the past 7 years with only ink cartridge replacement... I like the roll feed to avoid loading each sheet. and the 24" is fine for my work..

Replacement recommendation?

My HP450C got whacked a few years ago with similar issues. I bought a cheapy HP110Plus and am happy with it. It's slow & noisy, but makes great plots. I think it was around $1K. If I have lots of plots, I send them to the local print shop.

Replacement recommendation?

Did you try cleaning the two contacts points of the affected cartridge? Dampen a coffee filter with rubbing alcohol and clean the contacts on the back of the cartridge and also the contacts in the carriage.

I'd try replacing them if that doesn't work.

I've almostgiven up on my 450C a couple of time, but a little fussing gets the old work house back in the field.

Replacement recommendation?

Yep, cleaned the contacts but didn't help. Also tried the black cartridge in a color slot and it was recognized, and the color cartridge not recognized in the black slot.

I don't how much you want to spend to check it out but I had a similar problem. I replaced the black cartridge and cleaned the color cartridges which I never use and it still wouldn't work. I finally replaced all of the color cartridges and it (a HP350)
has worked fine ever since.
