Symptoms: Uncontrolled screaming. (I'm not sure if that means me, or the locator).
Remedy: New batteries.
I had my shonstedt go down about 6 mos ago. I bought another, (subsurface instruments). I don't like it as good as the shonstedt. It's the long round one. All push buttons.
Recently, I remembered a part of the manual: "in case of uncontrolled screaming, insert new batteries" or something like that.?ÿ
I've got my old shonstedt back. One less flea biting me.

They fixed one of mine and had it shipped back to me in less than a week for a flat rate of $175 plus tax & shipping.
Funny, I just came here to post about the shonstedt I'm using.
Mine is the opposite, the sound cuts out randomly.?ÿ If I smack the box lightly the sound might come back on briefly, or if it's on it changes its pitch with each swat.?ÿ I thought it might be a dying battery but it's been doing this occasionally for months-- I figured the battery would have died by now if that was the problem.?ÿ Anyone else run into this sort of thing before?

My GA-52 was being intermittent and I found the battery box had cracked so it wasn't pressing the contacts to the battery. I managed to rig a crude fix with an inserted metal plate inside the battery box. ?ÿ And it had a tendency to short one of the terminals to something else until I bent a wire.
That probably isn't your case, but I'd give it a close inspection.?ÿ And of course, try check the batteries or replace them if it works poorly when it is making any sound.

Maybe your box took a bit of a whack. And bent the battery ends in. Now connection is poor / intermittent or whatever.?ÿ
Many shonstedt have bent batteries.
C Batts would have disappeared, without shonstedt.?ÿ

As long as batteries last in a Schonstedt they can't be what's keeping C cells in retail store racks. I have or have had a few other things that use C's.
@nate-the-surveyor Mine uses 2 9 volts?ÿ Wouldn't trade my schoney for anything else.?ÿ It is a reliable tool.
@bstrand Mine was doing the same thing. Changed battery and it went back to normal.

The other thing you can look at is the 2 wires to the speaker.?ÿ Gently move them at the connection and see if the metal broke inside the plastic insulation.?ÿ It will make intermittent contact that way.
Then also check the wires to the knobs, possible same issue.
Then just send it in, it will be the best $175 you spend, we have done it twice in 35 years.
Unless that is, you want to go with a 92xtd.?ÿ Many many people do not like the xtd model, I love mine, and will never give it up.?ÿ I did have to have the fabric holder repaired though.?ÿ I bought that new plastic clip thing - JUNK!?ÿ I do keep one of the old 52 ones for punching through snow though.

We just sent them a Schonstedt GA 32 to fix up as one of our backups.
