> at least for a few hours?

Boy, today was one of those days.

I've got a small firm, me & 3 helpers (party chief, rodman & draftsman)

I answer my own phone and address all inquires, questions, etc.

When I left tonight, I check the phone record
I answered 43 calls today

Most of the calls were the typical spring time calls
about fences and landscaping

Worse.

I've wished they were uninvented.

Yes. Sometimes, I cannot work for the telephone ringing. And by the time I get my thoughts re-organized, it rings again.

I bought a cell phone for me to use. I have an old flip phone -a Rugby One. No "smart" phone (yet).
I just want to use a telephone most of the time. But it is kinda handy to pull up a geo-referenced quad map or an aerial photo with a blue GPS dot where I am. My nephew, who has a smartphone, helps me sometimes and is urging me to upgrade. I like my $30/month plan too well. I can use my data plan on my Ranger to do anything else.

Too many people are getting my cell phone number, and I get calls while I am in the field. Those are hard to deal with: find a piece of paper to make a note on; not losing the note!; create a text message to send to my e-mail address; not being able to answer a question while my notes and information are at my office; and having to stop what I am doing to deal with a phone call!

I have turned it on "silent" and worked uninterrupted the rest of the day. I need my thinking cap on while I am working.
My wife says that I have a one-track mind.......B-)

Not a one track mind, you are letting the phone secretary take a message for you and you don't get disturbed and have to find the slip of paper or try to keep a memory note. I do this all the time. If they won't leave a message, then I will use the caller id to call them back later.

I take it off the hook if I'm eating or in the shower. It gives the caller an honest response: "busy."

two phones here. one for work and one for personal.

the work phone is some kind of Samsung flip phone that stays at work, turned on @ 6:30 am and turned off @ 3:30 pm.

the personal phone is a Tracphone flip phone on a "buy the minutes card" plan.

i don't text, so you better be able to communicate effectively w/ your mind and voice.

regarding the hours on the work phone...well, that's one of the advantages of working for a gooberment that won't let you work overtime. there are disadvantages of working for a gooberment, but i believe i'll hold those thoughts until a much later date.
