There I was driving along Grant Road on my way to a project and I suddenly realized it is not on Campbell, it is on Swan. Meaning, I drove past it by several miles. The project is a detailed architectural survey of a corridor between professional offices in an open building. I figured it would be better on a Saturday with fewer people. Good thought, but that is when the Farmer’s Market takes over the corridor. Okay, I’ll work around that and set up control points with reflectorless. The day before I had set GPS control points in the parking lot, then run 3-wire levels through them for greater accuracy. Today, I have way too much slop for elevations based upon 3-wire levels. Not much, but still suspicious. Then I remembered I had never applied the 3-wire elevations to the control points.
Sometimes it is best to go home and read a good book.
Repeat after me,
I love my job.
I love my job.
I love my job.
Wow, that's like my old neighborhood.
If the three wires don't compute, just go to Las Margaritas on Grant and go into the bar. The restaurant is too noisy. Some quiet in a big booth and a margarita should bring your notes into focus. If not, consider buying or borrowing a digital level.
Sometimes you're the windshield. Sometimes you're the bug.
I'm quite sure that you can resolve those issues back at the office.
But I notice you did levels. I thought you worked solo? You must be impressively quick to be doing levels solo. You would be quicker still with a digital level.
I have run levels solo before, but not for too many turns, too slow with all that walking!

I wish I had the photo to post.
One of my long time (and older than me) associates had finally retired. He had downsized over the years and when he finally put it all down it was just him as a solo operator.
I had purchased some of his junk and went to pick it up. We were scrounging through his garage and I came upon a 14' collapsible fiberglass level rod...concreted into a 3 lb. coffee can. He said it was the best rodman he had ever had.;-)
My good wife kindly consented to be my rod person for an hour. Bad back and all, she was a trouper.
Bipods for level rods are available too.
I did a level circuit with a laser level one time but it closed a little rough.
Carl,
We used to be regulars at Las Margaritas, going back to 1979. Nice family restaurant. Remember the huge candle by the register? A few years ago we were in there, the place was almost empty, and the couple three tables over had a 6-year-old with them. The woman was loudly using every vulgarity you can imagine; every tenth word started with F, in front of her young daughter. I complained to the manager and he said he couldn't do anything about it, but offered to move us to the far corner. We thought moving the loudmouth was more appropriate, and never went back.
:good: 😀

I've often wondered about that, did you peg it first?
Dug
no, it was back in the 1990s. Those do have some slop in them, especially the further away you get.

So, where is the slop, in the width or intensity of the beam?
yes. as you get further away the beam gets larger.
Bruce-
I hear you.
The solution is to turn to the left and go into the bar.
Plenty of space for quiet dining. No children allowed. I hope you give the place another shot.
It was my cousin who introduced us to the place years ago. She and her husband, an Air Force Colonel, lived in a $700k adobe home in the Sam Hughes Historic District. They later moved away and have regretted it ever since.
