The cemetery where he and his family are buried is being threatned by a Wal Mart.

He is a very important figure in early Alabama history. If you don't know who he is, you won't be getting a surveyor's license in Alabama.

Nice presentation.
Not only Alabama history but US History as a general in the Battle of New Orleans.
Mandeville Louisiana which is one of the oldest s/d or cities in the early 1800's created by Bernard de Marigny has a street named after him. There are othe streets named after other generals like Adair and Carroll.
So it seems a shame on the bicentennial of the War of 1812 that Wal-mart will push to desecrate this person's cemetery.

Hopefully selecting this site is only another bait and switch tactic of Walmart. When they wanted to put a Superstore here, they selected a site in an older neighborhood that never would have had enough room to support the store. It would have required several zone changes and the uproar from neighbors was tremendous. The site was later moved to an area which only affected several well-to-do families and there was not enough opposition left to matter. They were certainly within their rights to build on the new site, but had they selected the second sight first, there would have been much more opposition than there wound up being. I guess the old bait and switch tactic served them quite well again.

I signed the petition. That would be a shame to desecrate his resting place in order to sell more Chinese junk.

I hope it is a bait and switch, because whomever in Wal-mart decided it was a good idea to even take a chance on building on anyones graves needs their A@# kicked in a a big way. Just who do they think they are. Let's suppose that the video interpretation is wrong and that the grave is actually a square, but there was some suspicion that it could have been a rectangle. Why would you even take the chance?

After watching the video, I don't think this is a bait and switch tactic. I'm betting that Walmart had their favorite out of town survey company blow into town and do one of those cookie cutter one day surveys that Walmart loves so much. In doing so, no one had any knowledge that a local surveyor might have had about the possible shape of the old cemetery or even an idea of where to look to see where it might have been.

From the video I recognized the company that prepared the plat. They are a very reputable surveying and engineering company from Birmingham, about a 2 hour drive from the site. I doubt they blew in and surveyed that site in one day. However, the survey crew probably didn't see the graves. I'm not sure that many local surveyors would have had any knowledge of them either.

Walmart sucks, they are planning do build one of their dumps in our little town and two small stores have already closed and more are probably to follow. Sad thing is, the mayor nearly pees his pants every time someone mentions walmart. 🙁

"Jackson, a novel" is what I am reading now.

Gen. Coffee is cast in a good light and seems to be a very interesting guy. He was Jackson's right hand man and his political chief of staff, more or less, in his campaign for president (that's as far as I've gotten.)

In the book he is portrayed as a very brave and capable man, who kept his own counsel, except with Jackson.

(author is Max Byrd)
