We have GR-3s with 915 SS radios and always find the radio signal drops out very quickly (less than 1000' sometimes) when there is a hill in between the base and rover. I am consider a kit from GPAC to elevate and upgrade the radio antenna. Here is the link to the kit:

Does anyone have any experience with this or a similar kit and SS radios?

Raising the transmitting antenna is a very good way to extend range. A simpler solution for the SS radios might be a repeater. Also check the GR3s to be sure they have the 511 option for unlimited range. some ss units did not

My original thought was to get a RE-S1 repeater but I think they run $2000 - $2500 so if we can upgrade and elevate the antenna for $200 I would rather try that first. I believe our range is limited at a mile for the radios but that really isn't a concern at this time. I am just trying to fix the problem of the radio dropping out after less than 1000' sometimes.

Matt,

I am having similar problems with my GR-3s. I bought the kit and see no difference in range. Any ideas? Do you know if it is possible to hook my base station up to the internet and just use my cell phone on the rover?
