It was bound to happen eventually. I was setting up for a resection, shoot the first point, walk to the second, and BEERLEG, it's behind the power pole. Walk to the third point and BEERLEG, it's behind the street tree. So much for setting up in the shade. Went and moved the instrument a few feet and proceeded. I was working solo so not sure who I owe.

Better than getting all set up and finding you are blocked on the fs, so I have heard anyway.
I have an uncanny ability to set control points that subsequently turn out to be blocked from view by the thinnest of saplings and sign posts.?ÿ It's such a regular phenomenon that I'm no longer surprised by it.
The 2 inch sign post that's the size of a barn from 300' away??ÿ Classic.
My super power is setting the instrument up just a bit too high, requiring extreme tippy-toes, and then needing to get 20-30 reflectorless shots...
(I carry a 1-step stool now, and hasn't been a problem since.)

I've taken to carrying bits of rope and ratchet straps to encourage foliage/small trees/signposts I didn't account for to give me that little bit extra for a clear line. The truck makes a good anchor point. Solid trunks and power poles are another matter!

Find with robotic work even more important to have the line 100% clear. Even small twigs/long grass/wire fence mesh seem to be enough to cause problems you didn't get with manual pointing.

I've had the rare helpers go lean on stuff but once the resections are unlocked, paint dots and hang pink tape and moving the instrument is faster than anything.
Finished staking this yesterday. Started the day dreading the whole thing because it was going to require knocking on two adjoiners' doors asking for access, and finished in record time after explaining to the new homeowner that it would really help if they knocked on doors with me. Something I asked for a few weeks ago in emails to the contractor in the murkey subcontractor situation but nobody realized this was the holdup until contractor kicked down the homeowner's contact info. We knocked on doors & we got access, and I set the final rebar & cap based on a reflectorless shot to a 4x4 fence post. I would have accepted the 4x4 post and put a nail and washer in the top. I was able to put a rebar and cap in the ground. It will be gone soon when the adjoiners replace the fence, but the contractor can tie a string around it and replace the 1921 zero setback garage before that happens.
