According to Wikipedia, the definition of Surveying is:

Surveying?ÿor?ÿland surveying?ÿis the technique, profession, art, and science of determining the terrestrial or three-dimensional positions of points and the distances and angles between them. A land surveying professional is called a?ÿland surveyor. These points are usually on the surface of the Earth, and they are often used to establish maps and boundaries for?ÿownership, locations, such as the designed positions of structural components for construction or the surface location of subsurface features, or other purposes required by government or civil law, such as property sales.

Surveyors work with elements of?ÿgeodesy,?ÿgeometry,?ÿtrigonometry,?ÿregression analysis,?ÿphysics, engineering,?ÿmetrology,?ÿprogramming languages, and the law. They use equipment, such as?ÿtotal stations, robotic total stations,?ÿtheodolites,?ÿGNSS?ÿreceivers,?ÿretroreflectors,?ÿ3D scanners, LiDAR sensors, radios,?ÿinclinometer, handheld tablets, optical and digital?ÿlevels, subsurface locators, drones,?ÿGIS, and surveying software.

Surveying has been an element in the development of the human environment since the beginning of?ÿrecorded history. The planning and execution of most forms of construction require it. It is also used in transport, communications, mapping, and the definition of legal boundaries for land ownership, and is an important tool for research in many other scientific disciplines.

Land surveyors, student land surveyors, and those in related fields, will probably be most concerned about how land surveying is defined in their states. They will be concerned about two different definitions

  1. The definition of land surveying which determines what activities can only be performed with a surveyor in responsible charge
  2. The definition of land surveying which determines what activities count toward the minimum experience needed to sit for the land surveying exam.

These "definitions" may not be explicitly stated as definitions in the laws and rules; they may emerge from a hodgepodge of laws and rules.

the definition of legal boundaries for land ownership

In the purest sense; this is what defines a Land Surveyor. It's my opinion, that we need different categories for licensure, like they do in other professions. But that's just my opinion...

If you think you need a license to hook a tape to a house corner, and measure how long it is; or measure every 8" (0.67') along a freshly poured footing, so someone can set rebar, to tie to, your going to get a lot of push back.

We could have licenses for construction surveyors, map makers, drone pilots, scanners, geodesists, and cadastral surveyors.

?ÿ

Don't survey outside of your expertise.

Amen.

I think we're long overdue for an overhaul of license structure and professional titles, at least here in the U.S.A. "Land Surveyor" connotes a variety of knowledge, training, certification, legal authority and competence depending on who you ask.

Maybe I'm mistaken but I believe every state has a definition in code. Here is Iowa.?ÿ

355.1 Definitions

4. ƒ??Land surveyingƒ? means surveying of land pursuant to chapter 542B

https://www.legis.iowa.gov/docs/code//542B.pdf

particularly 542B.2 (10 ) - practice of surveying.?ÿ

I would prefer that generic measuring of lines on the ground be defined as "surveying" done by anyone with certain applicable skills, and that a "professional land surveyor" is one who is required by law to either establish and document new properties or retrace existing properties

in France it exists the order of surveyors.

graduates with the title of engineer from the higher school of topographical surveyors or the national institute of applied sciences.

A young graduate will be able to claim the title of expert surveyor after an internship in a firm registered with the order.

they are guarantors of the definition and the materialization of the limits of the landed properties.

For the other areas of intervention there are different levels of diplomas ranging from the professional certificate of topographical operator to the master's degree in geomatics.
