I wonder why he bore down so hard on the NW and SE lines, then slacked off on the NE-SW lines? There's just no excuse for such carelessness.

No excuse, but I'd bet that a "draftsman" just picked the nodes and that's what he got. I've pulled sanitary sewer "As-builts" with inverts printed to the ten thousandth. It just shows that someone is not paying attention.

So... did you find all 5 points? Did your results vary?

I bet his bearings were in degrees, feet, and inches, too...

They found an iron pipe (no size listed!) but replaced it with their own monument. Why?:-S

I don't know about that specific state, there may be a requirement to replace monuments that aren't up to some minimum standard.

meters?

If you reduce those distances to meters, all but one converts relatively evenly.

77.133' = 23.510 m
52.0335' = 15.860 m
117.1275' = 35.700 m
86.862' = 26.475 m +/-

things that make you go "hmmmm"...

Yolo County is just west of Sacramento, CA. It looks like it may have been a County crew that did this since they set a "Yolo County Monument" (or Yolo Cou... Monument).

We are supposed to rehabilitate monuments in poor condition, but could leave an old IP in place as long as it's straight & solid. The portion of the Government Code that governs the County Surveyor's duties describes minimum pipe size for various PLSS corners, and if they find something less than that, they are (arguably) obligated to remonument with the more substantial monument per the statute.

I don't recall anything in the County Surveyors' Act that states that their measurement precision needs to be down to a hair's breadth.

His bearings were only to the nearest SECOND! Outrageous! :-O

In this case, the IP was going to be disturbed by bridge reconstruction. The standard county monument was used to replace it post-construction as part of the county construction contract.

I haven't been to the site -- I was asked to prepare a cost proposal to replace the RP on the bridge that got destroyed by yet another bridge rebuild. If they decide to go ahead, I'll look for the other RPs (not too optimistic about finding the 1"x2" and tag, though) and see if I can measure as well as the other guy did.

MAYBE... not so outrageous ...

With GIS and the super GIS operators, I've seen more that one surveyor go to thousanths on survey maps(and descriptions), as the only way to get an "adequate", closure for the GIS department.

I knew of one GIS department who would use each point as the beginning(ignoring the POB), and look for the worse closure then reject the map/description.

Sometimes stupid things have an answer.

Are you an engineer or architect?

Why blame inadequate CAD standards on the poor field surveyor?:-P
