It was time to get a new one, an option I wanted to look at was the F-j, but it appears they aren't made anymore. Discontinued!!
Too bad, they were good from what I've been told, I don't need or want a Pick-up so there aren't all that many real options to look at.
I kind of wonder if the goofy paint colors were a prime issue in driving off the type of buyer who wants a rig like that.
Goofy paint colors are a 4x4 tradition.

I feel your pain Mighty...
Although several manufacture's still produce REAL 4x4 vehicles (once known as Bobtails), none of them are sold in the US anymore (with the exception of the Nissan Xterra and Jeep Wrangler).
The Taliban can buy the "good stuff," but we can not (go figure).
The Toyota 4-Runner is supposed to be THE Toyota "off road" vehicle now, but it is too big, too plush, and way too expensive. Pretty much all of the "SUVs" (whatever that is), are aimed at the Soccer Moms and weekend "outdoorsman" now.
Oh well, my FJ will probably outlast me!

I like my Tundra 4 door work truck. Sounds like a fckn' NASCAR when I get on it... Lots of power. Certainly a Heavy Half...
Has a Silver Shield divider rack in the box with tonneau cover. IMHO, they're the best that I have used. Adjustable. Seem to hold up. Beats wooden boxes.

That's exactly why we've owned several Wranglers. I'm not that big of a Jeep fan, but it's made on this continent and built with some structural integrity. They are cramped and lack storage with absolutely no economy when it comes to suckin' gasoline. But the farther out in the hills and the higher you get, they love it. You cannot appreciate a Jeep Wrangler until you take it off road...really off road.
I do wish there were a few more choices out there.
Do you guys really not get the Toyota Landcruiser ?
And what about the Landrover Defender?

Nope...unless you consider this a "Land Cruiser." It STARTS @ about $80,000.00 US, and is intended for RICH soccer moms.

NOPE again, not for years now!

We get that one
But also this, which would be my choice if I could afford one....
Jeep Gladiator
Pick up a decent 2wd and a sweet 4x4 side by side four wheeler for the same price as one vehicle. Ride in style and still get wherever you need to.

Moe, a year ago I would have recommended a Nissan Xterra, but the official word came down this week that the very last one to be built is rolling down the assembly line. Really sad b/c I have owned two (Gen 1 and a NextGen). These trucks got me everywhere I needed to go. I now drive a Titan.

Here in the states we can not get these new defenders or the LC 79 series unless they are 25 years old b/c of our NTSB standards. Really sucks b/c those trucks are almost perfect for a solo surveyor.

I know Toyota will keep something that sells, why the FJ had problems makes me wonder, they seem to be popular here I think it had more to do with their looks.
I had an 86 4-Runner for years and it was one of the best off roaders I ever had, underpowered on the highway but off road it went anywhere. The new ones,,,,,,,,,,not so much.
There is no ford at all, no chevy, no dodge, no Honda, it's just the jeep. Nissan doesn't have a dealer near, and I don't want to mess with that hassle.
The good thing is since all the other real 4x4 SUV's have vanished the Wrangler is the #1 (along with the Tacoma) resale vehicle in the country and around here it is by far. I'm seeing 3 year old ones with 40,000 mi selling within $5000 of the same new one.

and solid front axle too. That would make a sweet truck to build out as an expedition vehicle or survey rig.

It's not an FJ but I did find this on for sale:
A "slightly" modified wrangler

A bad idea. There's a reason bumpers have some give to them; would you rather replace a damaged bumper or deal with frame damage? Assuming the rig is also fully armoured up underneath, all that steel is cutting in to the paltry 800-1000lb payload capacity. Also, there's a lot of money involved in such modifications, 25k or more if you go whole hog. It's redneck bling folks, the gazillion candlepower lighting system is a clue.
Dang it, guys. Ain't nothin' better'n an old farm-use pickup with 4WD. You can run over anything and not worry about reducing the trade-in value. Sure, it don't look too sophisticated parked next to a new Lexus, but no one is going to take that Lexus out where we go.

"Redneck bling" LOL, I have to remember that one.
The deer catcher is a bit underwhelming however, I like the bigger version so when I hit them they just bounce to the left or right.:-)
