Most likely your drawing template has been set to use "color dependent plot styles" rather than "named plot styles". The setting is under Tools, Options, Plotting. Start a new drawing and copy everything from the first drawing into the new drawing. There's probably a more elegant way to convert an existing drawing but I do not know it.
The above is based on AutoCAD 2000, hopefully it is the same in 2008.

Or is the directory that contains the plotstyle files correctly referenced?
