I am running Carlson Survey (AutoCAD not Intelicad) version 2015. For some reason I cannot XREF a drawing into another. The XREF window comes up like so:?ÿ
but as soon as I hit the attach drawing button, nothing happens. The window should pop up so I can go pick the dwg I want to XREF in. It seems like Carlson thinks that window has popped up, because it will not let me do anything else inside its program. I can use other programs (email, MSWord, Google earth...) but not Carlson until I hit the esc key a few times.
It is like it thinks you can see the window for choosing your drawing but the window never shows up. Oh and once an XREF is loaded in a drawing (from another office PC) I can deal with the drawing.?ÿ
I have the same OPTIONS setting as he does, and I reinstalled last week to try to fix the problem. It's still there....
Any clues.... I have been just dealing with this by going to my coworkers PC and doing XREFs from there, but he is getting tired of me buggin' him. ???ÿ ?ÿ

If you were actually in AutoCad, I'd say check your FILEDIA system variable.
?ÿ
This controls whether or you see a dialog, or a prompt on the command line.?ÿ I've never actually used Carlson, but I would assume since you say you're using the AutoCad version it's something similar.
Does Carlson have a command line, and if so what's in the command line when this happens?
I just tried that it says:
Enter new value for FILEDIA <1>:?ÿ
Are my only options '0' and '1'??ÿ
if you change the toggle to attach PDF or image, then change it back, does that do anything??ÿ seems like i've had that same issue once or twice in the past and did something similar.
@ppm just checked the autodesk site and it seems that you want 1.
FILEDIA (System Variable)
Suppresses display of file navigation dialog boxes.
Type: | Integer |
Saved in: | Registry |
Initial value: | 1 |
Value |
Description |
---|---|
0 |
Does not display dialog boxes. You can still request a file dialog box to appear by entering a tilde (~) in response to the Command prompt. |
1 |
Displays dialog boxes. However, if a script is active, an ordinary prompt is displayed. Prompts are also displayed if an AutoLISP or ObjectARX? program is active. (Not applicable to AutoCAD LT.) |
If I can dig it up I'll let you know.

I am newly back to using Carlson, but I was last using it back around 2015, and I had a similar experience. I don't remember if it was with XRefs, but I definitely had a dialogue box that I could not access. It's possible that it may be hidden behind other windows, but I seem to recall minimizing everything and still not seeing it. I don't remember what I did to fix it, or if it just reappeared one day, but I'll give you a couple of suggestions, other than minimizing other windows to see if it's hiding somewhere.
First, just switch to a different workspace and try the command. If it works, switch back to your regular workspace and try again. If that doesn't work, then go to Options,?ÿunder the Profiles tab, switch to the Unnamed Profile, close it out, then go back again and switch it back to the Carlson profile.
If neither of those work, I'll offer a workaround. Instead of using the palette to attach an XRef, go old school. If you type in -xref?ÿ(with the dash), you will get options at the command line. Option A will be for attaching. Try it first with your Filedia set to 1. That may or may not bring up your dialogue box. If it doesn't, then back out and set Filedia to 0. That will let you type in the file you wish to attach. If it's in the same path then you only need the drawing name. Otherwise, you'll have to input the entire path and file name (you can copy the directory structure within your windows explorer and paste it to the command line then add the file name). Don't forget to reset Filedia back to 1 if you had to set it to 0.
Obviously the workarounds won't fix your problem, but it will allow you to accomplish your task. It may be that your dialogue box just shows back up one day. Again, it's been to long since it happened to me, and I don't recall if I fixed it or if it just fixed itself.
XREFs and line tables - 2 things I'm happy I never have a need for

One thing to try would be to check to see if your computer is due for a video card driver update. With recent Windows Updates that have been getting rolled out, the trickle-down effect might be in play.
I hope this information helps.

I tried that and still get no window coming up.?ÿ
Thank you for that suggestion. I think that may be what I have to do, the work around.?ÿ
video card driver update
How do I do this??ÿ I Googled a little and also searched at the Start Button.?ÿ I am dense...
Thank you. I will have my tech person assist me with that here soon. I hope it works.?ÿ?ÿ

This sounds like a case where the window for choosing your drawing is off the screen somewhere and not visible. Can happen when a monitor is removed or changed from your PC, possibly other situations too.
Try this: Go to insert XREF and get to the point where you can't do anything. Next press Alt+Space at the same time, release those keys and then press the M key on your keyboard. Next use the left cursor key (hold down for a second or two) to see if the window comes into view, if not stop and use the right cursor key.
Alt+Space opens up the window menu of the active window. You can try this on any active window that is visible to see the menu. M is the move option, I believe only available on a non-maximized window.
@brad-ott One way to accomplish this (for example, in Windows 10 where it says "Type here to search") is to:
- type?ÿdevice manager. This will bring up the Device Manager dialog box from the Control Panel.
- Find (and expand) the "Display adapters" grouping.
- Right+click on the desired display adapter (you might have more than one) and choose the "Update driver" option. Windows may (or may not) find an update. You can also use the Make/Model information of the video card (along with the brand of the computer/laptop) and search the vendor web-site directly for drivers or contact their technical support staff for driver assistance.
I hope this information helps.
@ladd-nelson yes Ladd, that was very helpful and went well, but alas, did not help my image fade 50 vs 0 problem:
