Hi,

I'm trying to import an old SMI "asc" file into Topcon Magnet 5.0. I get to the point where I select the file on the thumb drive and I have selected 12d ASCII as the file type. Nothing shows up on my thumb drive. When I select "all files" I see my file as 88001.01.asc.?ÿ I pick it and I import Error file format is incorrect. I can see that Magnet wants a 12d ASCII file and I am working with a asc file. Can I change the extension somewhere along the line or do I need to convert the file some how??ÿ

Many thanks in advance

JR,?ÿ

How are you! Try renaming the file to a .txt. Also, maybe take the . out of the middle of the filename.

Hey mate,

?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ Magnet recognises an asc file as a CivilCAD 4 file, not 12D. Try selecting the "Customizable ASCII Point Files" instead and see if that works. to import 12D files they need to have the 12da file extension.?ÿ

Here is an example of 3 lines from an old SMI asc file

3,?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ4979.9335633,?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ5524.3759575,?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ 0.0000000,
4,?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ5352.5254588,?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ5669.8932394,?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ0.0000000,RP
5,?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ4983.4204811,?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ5824.0409459,?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ ?ÿ0.0000000,PT

In Magnet Field I use Topcon Text Custom (*.txt) as a import format?ÿ

When you select your asc file use the All Files (*.*) Type

The custom text file format delimiter set to Comma

The File style set to Name,N,E,Elev,Codes

Works for me.?ÿ

@linebender

Thanks Linebender . I was stalled on this. I got your instructions to work. Also it put some insight on dealing with other format incompatibility problems
