Anyone recommend a good substitute for MS Access? I use it to log my projects and for my in house GIS (Carlson), got to have something to access a MDB with. Looks like it's only available now in the 365 thing where you rent it by the year, and I don't like that. I would prefer to just buy software outright. I can buy MS Office 2016 with everything that I need except Access, don't know why they singled this one out. TIA

Peter Ehlert may be able to help more, but I might suggest Open Office Base.

Apache OpenOffice Base

Disclaimer: I have not used either access or base, so I can not compare the two.

I used Access a lot, but not for quite a while.
I don't use Open Office anymore, it got forked and I did not try to stay with it. It may be the best one for you.
A parallel office suite is Libre Office, it comes bundled with several major Linux distributions.
there is a database module included in LibreOffice, but I have not tried it. the wizard looks simple, but I don't have any files handy to try it (the windows version would not be identical).

There are versions configured for Windows, Apple, and Linux... download and give it a try with your files: https://www.libreoffice.org/&apos ;">Home | LibreOffice - Free Office Suite - Fun Project - Fantastic People

(it is Open Source, so anybody can see the code. that means a gazillion geekie types world wide are inspecting it and would raise a red flag if malware is suspected... it should be much safer than Access)

What version of Access are you using now? MS hasn't really changed anything in Access since 2010. You can find Access 2010 retail versions on eBay for $150 or less.

I'm using Access 2010 on my W7 64-bit desktop without any trouble.

Jim,
I'm using the 2013 version that comes with MS Office 365. I could probably save my database back to 2010 or something.
It's probably not a big deal for most since it seems like all the software is going rental, but I detest it.
I'll look for an older version and/or look at Peter's LibreOffice. I tried the OpenOffice on a laptop, and it was kind of clunky for a database editor to me.

According to Microsoft, you can buy Access 2016 for $110 on their website.
